So yeah… there is a live action Barbie movie on its way. The film is the first to adapt the iconic Mattel toyline into a live action flick. The film is helmed by Greta Gerwig who is an Oscar winning director for Lady Bird. She has co-written the film with Marriage Story’s writer-director Noah Baumbach. Not to mention Gerwig and Baumbach have been in a romantic relationship from 2011. So them writing a Rom-Com like this could be really great. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and stars Margot Robbie in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.

The film was in production in the Spring. The filming of the movie took place in London under tight security, which had to be joke seeing the amount of set photos we’d gotten that revealed so many sets and different outfits of Barbie and Ken. Apart from them, the official first looks revealed by Warner Bros. shows us Robbie’s Barbie driving a pink convertible in a pink set and Gosling’s Ken in a denim vest flaunting his physique. Along with the first look, just this month Warner Bros. has released the first teaser of the film which was as playful as you’d expect. We got out first look at Simu Liu in that teaser and now the actor has revealed what is the central theme or message of the film.

What is the Central Message of the Barbie Movie?

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Shang Chi actor Simu Liu was quizzed about his upcoming venture in 2023, the actor was asked about his character what really is Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie about. Liu revealed that the Barbie movie is about finding inner beauty thus ruining the entire central message and pivotal theme of the movie. The actor said:

“It’s really about finding your inner beauty and owning that part of yourself and being the best possible version of you.” He added, “I remember very clearly about some of our big intricate dance sequences. Greta was very, very conscientious about who she cast. We were able to cast people of different shapes, sizes, differently abled, to all participate in this dance—all under this message of: You don’t have to be blonde, white, or X, Y, Z in order to embody what it means to be a Barbie or a Ken.”

In conclusion the actor said, “I will say, going on set I was never isolated. I felt like I was going to work every day with a cast that really celebrated each other and celebrated each other’s differences, no matter where we came from. I think when you watch the movie, you’ll see that reflected on the screen.”
