For those who are unaware, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is an upcoming American black comedy action film directed by Tom Gormican. It stars Nicolas Cage as himself, Pedro Pascal as his huge fan, and Sharon Horgan as Cage’s ex-wife in the lead. The film is an amalgam of reality and fiction as it stars Nicolas Cage as Nicolas Cage but would explore a unique fictional adventure.

About the Film and Release

Nicolas Cage is one of the biggest and most popular stars of Hollywood and has a cult following as well. His resume is filled with many incredible films, lots of average films, and some downright bad films. But over the years, he has played so many iconic characters that the film basically serves as a ode to his career. Its synopsis reads:

Actor Nicolas Cage begrudgingly accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a billionaire super fan. When things take a wild turn, Nic is forced to become a version of some of his most iconic and beloved characters in order to extricate his wife and daughter from the fan who is a notorious drug lord.

Its undoubtedly a unique concept and with an excellent supporting cast, it could be quite amazing. And it seems like our hopes and dreams for the film have come true as it has received excellent reviews. The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2022, so reviews are pouring in from all sides. Its official theatrical release in USA is scheduled on April 22, 2022, which is still a month away. Nevertheless, here’s a review roundup for the upcoming film.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Reviews

First of all, as of now the movie stands at 100% approval rating of Rotten Tomatoes which is quite rare for any cinematic venture. The average score by 17 critics is 7.4/10 but the 100% rating suggests everyone adored the film. That aside, it has an average score of 8.8/10 on IMDB and 78% of Metacritic. So, the rating metric sites suggest that the film is bonkers. Now lets look at some the reviews.

RogerEbert gave it 3.5/4 and said, “The filmmakers pull from every corner of Cage’s filmography to craft something transcendent.”IndieWire called it “one of the funniest movies of the year” and TheWrap pointed towards its “original and inspired concept”. While most critics praised Nicolas Cage, Pedro Pascal also received widespread acclaim with The Hollywood Reporter saying that he “steals several scenes from a performer who’s nearly impossible to ignore”.

Variety calls it “both a cheesy thing and a special thing” while The Verge being critical said that it is an “aimless action-comedy that diagnoses its own narrative issues instead of fixing them.” Nicolas Cage’s performance was praised by everyone and Dread Central went on to call it “Nicolas Cage’s best performance because, really, it’s every performance bottled into one.” So, it really doesn’t matter if you are a Cage fan or not. As long as you are a cinema aficionado, you must surely watch this one. Although being a fan would really help you understand a lot of jokes and references throughout the film.
