Top Gun Maverick Should Eye $1 Billion Box Office Collection to Beat the Original

Top Gun: Maverick is the direct sequel to the cult classic film Top Gun that released almost 36 years from today. While the sequel for it was in the works for a long time, it never seem to have cohesively work out. Initially, Paramount had plans to bring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer back with director Tony Scott for the sequel in 2010. However, the tragic suicide of the director in 2012 pressed a long break on the project. It wasn’t until 2017 when Joseph Kosinski came on board to helm the sequel. The principal photography for Top Gun: Maverick finally kicked off in mid 2018 and would continue till early 2019 with plans to release it in July 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic had different plans. With multiple delays and reshoots, Maverick finally returned on May 27th 2022 and boy was it worth it.

The film enjoyed a massive box office surge despite the skepticism of audiences regarding theatres. It was lauded by the critics for its great action sequences and most importantly the emotional weight carried by the film. A lot of people found it better than the original including me. While Paramount is enjoying the box office success of Maverick, recently they gave us an update for its streaming release date.

When Will Top Gun: Maverick Be Available to Stream?

The film has amassed $885 million till this point. The film performed phenomenally on the domestic box office with more than $465 million, making it the highest grossing film at the domestic box office in 2022. At the global box office the film is only second to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which currently sits at $943 million. Although, every analysis predicts the film will soon cross the Benedict Cumberbatch starrer and take the crown.

By the first weekend of July, the film should be able to achieve this feat rendering it as the Highest Grossing film of 2022 at the Global Box Office as well. While many predicted Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be the first film to cross the $1 billion threshold, it didn’t. Although, Maverick is all set to pass the $1 billion mark because of its amazing trends and lack of strong competition until Thor: Love and Thunder. Now with the film performing so well at the box office it does raise the question will it release on any streaming service soon? As that may result in its box office numbers dropping. Well, thankful for us Paramount has given an answer.

Paramount Streaming CEO Tom Ryan’s Statement

In a recent interview with Variety, Tom revealed, “I think a year or so ago, there was a lot of discussion about what the right model was for movies to streaming, and we were one of the first, if not the first, to come out with the 45-day post theatrical, which gives a lot of value to the marketing of content and allows you to give it a great theatrical exclusive window, but then bring it quickly to streaming. We haven’t decided on that [the theatrical window for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’] yet.” While studios like Warner Bros who released their new movie both in theatres and on their streaming service HBO Max on the same day, ViacomCBS came up with its own plan.

For its movies slated from 2021-2022 it structured a 45 day theatrical release and then bringing the film to their streaming platform. Given Cruise’s affinity with theatrical experience and the success the film is enjoying in the box office, it seems like the film is not getting a streaming service release date anytime soon.
