Recently, Todd Phillips confirmed a sequel to 2019’s Joker, titled Joker: Folie à Deux. While the eccentric title of Joker 2 has confused a lot of people, we have no real clue about the plot of the film. Although, if rumors are to be trusted, they suggest the film is supposedly modelled after another Scorsese film. It’s no secret that like all of us Todd Philips too is an admirer of Mr. Scorsese’s work. The first film in the franchise referenced two Scorsese films and used them to add meaning in its plot. The two films being The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Similar to its predecessor, the sequel too pays homage to the GOAT.
New York New York inspiration for Joker 2: Folie à Deux?
While the first film was a carbon copy of Taxi Driver’s structure, where a lonely man descends into anarchy and King of Comedy where a comedian who is supposed to make others laugh is crying inside. These direct references to Scorsese’s works made the film more wholesome. Another thing to point out is, Scorsese served as an executive producer during the early stages of the film until he left the project to focus on The Irishman (2019). Although, his co-producer in the gangster flick, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, produced Joker. Coincidence? I think not.
As soon as the sequel was announced, fans were curious will this one pay tribute to Scorsese as well. They found a match when when it was revealed that the treatment of the film is a musical and thankfully for us Scorsese in his early days has directed a musical titled, New York New York (1977). The journey of the film is classic Scorsese, an aspiring saxophonist and singer get into a relationship but as they’re met with challenges in their respective crafts it starts to bleed into their relationship. Another factor that supports this theory is the rumored inclusion of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn in the film.
It’s not stretch to think she’ll be a singer in the film who will have similar problems like Arthur making them fall for each other and cause more chaos. Her being a singer is amplified with the possibility of Lady Gaga playing the part. If you still don’t believe this check Grace Randolph herself believing in the possibility of this happening.

Well, we don’t know anything for sure as of now but we hope for the best. Joker: Folie à Deux doesn’t have a release date yet.
