Elvis Poor Reviews Might Lead to A Box Office Failure

Elvis is a 2022 biographical musical drama film based on the life of Elvis Presley which has been directed by Baz Luhrmann and written by Luhrmann, Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner. It stars Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Olivia DeJonge, Luke Bracey, Natasha Bassett, David Wenham, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Samuel, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Elvis is dedicated to the memory of The Ladd Company’s founder Alan Ladd Jr., and is all set to release worldwide on June 24, 2022. With its release just a week away, let us talk about its probable Box Office Collections.

Elvis Box Office Predictions

Elvis will be released alongside The Black Phone in US and Canada, and is estimated to gross $35–55 million during its opening weekend as well as a domestic total of $110–170 million. Although, The Black Phone isn’t really a huge competition, it will compete with Jurassic World: Dominion, Pixar’s Lightyear and Top Gun: Maverick which is still going strong.

The reviews for Elvis aren’t that promising, as critics are calling it anything between awful to average. There are hardly any reviews so far which are positive, and even though it features a 77% approval rating on RT it’s score is around 6.8. Similarly, Metacritic gave it a score of 62/100, and IndieWire gave it a score of 1.5/5. The early audience reactions and reviews weren’t good as well, so owing to all this, it might as well be a box office failure.

Elvis has been made with a $200 Million budget and post review scenario might lead it to be a box office flop. But if we take past as an example, Bohemian Rhapsody also opened to below average reviews but ended up grossing over $900 Million and being one of the biggest and most awarded film of 2018. So, the chances of Elvis’ box office success are still high because:

  • Worldwide popularity of Elvis Presley
  • Its social media mentions and trends are only behind major blockbusters
  • Inclusion of Tom Hanks would cater to a lot of his fans and audience
  • For that particular weekend, its only competition is The Black Phone

So, even poor to average reviews it may survive especially in the US, however, we are not so sure that will perform well worldwide.

  1. The research into this article is a joke. The reviews for Elvis have been really good, and MOSTLY positive with a current 77% rotten tomato score. Moreover, it received a 12-minute standing ovation at CANNES last week. In terms of fan reviews, those online (YouTube) are all positive ranging from above-average to excellent.

    1. Exactly right. This is the first I’ve heard of many bad reviews. Seems odd to me.

  2. This is the first I’ve heard of actual people not liking the film. Everyone who is not a critic has been glowing about this movie. Many critics that I have read have been favorable to the movie with me seeing only two that were bad, and one was an insane review from The Guardian, criticizing the movie for retelling the same old story like how Elvis turned on the young girls, but he would liked to have seen a movie expose how he also turned in young gay men. If that’s who’s giving bad reviews, looks like this movie may be number 1. I’m starting to think that certain sites like this have ties to certain movie studios and distributors, and do the work of what those studios want.

    1. Trust me it’s not that. Internet acts different at different points of time. When I checked it, the reviews were mediocre to bad, so I came up with this article. I really want this movie to succeed but those poor reviews got me thinking that it may fail. However I mentioned later that there are more reasons for it to succeed than fail, and how the same happened to Bohemian Rhapsody.

PS – I am a huge Tom Hanks fan so I definitely don’t want this film to fail. Also, we are a small time site which has no ties to anyone whatsover, however, we surely hope that happens for us in future. Do not get enraged by this “could have, would have article” and if possible, support us!

      1. I was able to see complete movie trailer in theater couple weeks ago. You said you want this movie to succeed. Why this movie? Aside from being a fan of Hanks?

    2. From US media, majority of reviews are positive. So I disagree with this article. But it’s interesting when it comes to a figure that is so much a part of American culture; when negative things are said/written about that figure now they question the integrity of certain sites🤨

  3. I am lucky to have already seen an early screening of the film and I plan of seeing it again. I have to admit that I am an Elvis fan and have seen all of the other biopics based on his life. This is by far the best. Also, I went to the screening with someone who had never listened to Elvis or seen any of his movies and they were blown away. Like the Queen film, there are amazing musical moments in this film. The best performance in the film and there are many good ones is delivered by Tom Hanks. He is playing a villain for the first time in his career and he disappears into the part.
I believe that the problem that some critics may have with this film is that it stays on the subject. It does not get political. It does not have a social ax to grind. The movie is one hundred percent about the life of the most popular entertainer in history and who could ask for more.
My review is a 9 out of 10.

  4. I saw the film tonight. I do not believe anyone could have better played the role of Elvis than Austin Butler, and nor could anyone match Baz Luhrman’s genius in tapping into myriad personalities and events that both shaped and provided the backdrop for Elvis the person and the performer. I was mesmerized by the countless cutaways and flashbacks that peppered this film—- brilliantly presented.
I will not hesitate to see it again
