The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 5 Review – A Bo-Katan Show + Ending Explained

Disney Plus and Star War’s flagship show The Mandalorian is back with its highly anticipated season 3. Although the first episode kind of failed to replicate the magic of first two seasons, we are all pretty optimistic about what awaits us in the rest of the season. Thankfully Episode 2 was a solid return to form which took you back to the glory days of The Mandalorian. And while Episode 3 and 4 being good were somewhat debatable, Episode 5 was definitely a good one. Read on to catch our in-depth review of The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 5 below but beware that some MAJOR SPOILERS follow below! Review Marathon – Episode 1 / Episode 2 / Episode 3 / Episode 4.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 5 – The Plot Thickens

Rating – ★★★★

This episode of the Mandalorian once again takes focus off our original protagonists in the favor of world building. It ties together most of the events of the season so far, showcases a cameo of Zeb Orellios from Star Wars: Rebels, boasts off an impressive battle sequence, and ends with a plot twist which has got fans theorizing. Before getting to that, let us address the rest of the episode. So first of all, it is now official that this is no longer a Din Djarin and Grogu show but rather a Bo-Katan and other Mandalorians show. Well, technically the show is titled “The Mandalorian” and not Din Djarin but obviously, most of us still see him as the main protagonist. However, it doesn’t seem that way this season barring episode 1.

Although, Din still acts as the connecting thread between all the characters and plot points, he isn’t doing all that much. I mean sure, he is one of the major players in all plot points and battles, but the episodes this season ultimately end up glorifying Bo-Katan much more. Most of us thought and wanted Din to be the one to unite the Mandalorians but it seems like Bo is going to do that. I am not sure I fully understand Armorer’s point of view when she permitted Bo to take off her helmet and walk both the worlds. Sure it makes sense larger plot wise but it definitely does not when it comes to how much of a stickler for rules the Armorer is. As for Grogu, he was barely visible in one of the scenes in the episode and I seriously think there is nothing more left for him to do.

Anyways, the entire battle sequence with the pirates on Nevarro was quite well executed where Vizla, Armorer, Din, and Bo all got a few moments to shine. What I do not understand about that entire arc, however, is that how were the pirates able to take over an entire planet with a single ship? I mean doesn’t Nevarro have any kind of army or defense at all? It sure didn’t look that way. Another thing I am finding a bit hard to understand is that what do the Mandalorians want? Do they want to take back Mandalore or do they want to stay hidden or do they wanna settle in the lands offered by Greef Karga? It is quite unclear, although, we hope that would be made more clear in the final 3 episodes of the season.

Moving on to the ending, we see X-Wing Carson Teva investigating a crash site and finding out that the spaceship had been attacked. Apparently, it was a ship carrying Moff Gideon which never made to his trial. As you’ve already made out, there are no survivors of the ship and Moff Gideon is missing. What’s interesting is that Teva detects the presence and usage of Beskar for his escape, which leads him to believe that it was the Mandalorians who have Moff Gideon. Now obviously, we know Din had nothing to do with it and most probably so don’t the rest of the Mandos we know. So, either it has been done by some other group of Mandos or this is all part of Gidon’s grand scheme. Guess we’ll find out next week!

Final Verdict – The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 5 was a satisfying episode which unlike Episode 1 or 3, did not bring the quality of the show down. That said, it also wasn’t the best episode of the season as Episode 2 still holds on to that status. So far, this season has proven to be the weakest one but with 3 episodes to go, The Mandalorian can certainly turn it around.

The first two seasons and the first 5 episodes of Season 3 of The Mandalorian are now streaming on Disney Plus. Season 3 episode 6 will air on 5th April at 12:00 AM PT.
