The world of Ice and Fire returned with a huge bang last year with House of the Dragon, after a largely disappointing final season of Game of Thrones! House of the Dragon is the story of the war that decimated millions of people and led to the near extinction of dragons. Adapted from A Dance with Dragons, Season 1 of the show was an overwhelming success for HBO, both in terms of viewership as well as critical acclaim and accolades. A second season wasn’t even a question and its latest second season trailer has left viewers more piqued than ever. Being a show about the Targaryens, we’ll be seeing a lot of dragons in the coming seasons and this article will help you track them well!

House of the Dragon: All 17 Dragons Who Die, and 4 Who Survive

As you may know, House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, which is a spin-off prequel to A Song of Ice and Fire series. In this book, a major event in the history of Westeros called The Dance of the Dragons is heavily featured. This refers to the Targaryen civil war over the Iron Throne of Westeros, fought between rival factions supporting different Targaryen claimants – The Blacks and The Greens. While The Blacks supported Princess Rhaenyra, The Greens supported King Aegon II. This conflict led to widespread death and destruction and ended up killing 17 of the 21 dragons that existed during that time. So, here’s a list of all these dragons, their riders, and how they eventually fell. We are pretty sure you will not find another article like this as the Internet seems to be pretty confused about this stuff. But after a lot of research on various wikis we have compiled a perfect and to the point list for you!

1. Arrax: Ridden by Prince Lucerys Velaryon. He and Luke were killed in the battle against Vhagar and Aemond Targaryen.

2. Meleys: Ridden by Princess Rhaenys. Both of them died during the battle against Vhagar and Sunfyre ridden by Aemond and King Aegon II respectively.

3. Caraxes: Ridden by Prince Daemon Targaryen. Both of them were killed in the battle against Vhagar and Aemond Targaryen.

4. Vhagar: Ridden by Prince Aemond Targaryen. Both of them were killed in the battle against Caraxes and Daemon Targaryen.

5. Moondancer: Ridden by Princess Baela Targaryen. The young dragon was killed in battle against Sunfyre and King Aegon II, while Baela was captured.

6. Sunfyre: Ridden by King Aegon II Targaryen. Mortally wounded in the battle against Baela Targaryen and Moondancer, Sunfyre died a few days later.

7. Stormcloud: Ridden by Prince Aegon III Targaryen (Future King). Aegon escaped captivity of warships sailing under the banners Three Daughters, flying away on Stormcloud in his first ever flight. He managed to escape but the dragon took a lot of hits to his belly, utimately leading to his demise.

8.Vermax: Ridden by Prince Jacaerys Velaryon. Both of them died during the Battle in the Gullet where Vermax flew too low and crashed into a burning galley.

9. Vermithor: Ridden by Ser Hugh Hammer. Vermithor died after suffering wounds after battling Seasmoke and Tessarion.

10. Seasmoke: Ridden by Addam Velaryon. Seasmoke’s head was torn off by an enraged riderless Vermithor.

11. Tessarion: Ridden by Prince Daeron Targaryen. Riderless Tessarion was heavily wounded in three-way battle against Vermithor and Seasmoke. The next day she was killed by Lord Benjicot Blackwood, as an act of mercy to spare her the suffering.

12. Syrax: Initially ridden by Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. During riots and sack of Dragonpit, Joffrey tried to ride Syrax but Syrax threw him off mid air causing his death. As for Syrax, he was killed by the rioters moments later.

13. Tyraxes: Ridden by Prince Joffrey Velaryon. Tyraxes was killed in the Dragonpit by a mob during riots.

14. Dreamfyre: Ridden by Queen Helaena Targaryen. During the riots, half-blind and maddened, Dreamfyre flew into the Dragonpit’s great dome above resulting in her death.

15. Morghul: Bound to but never ridden by Princess Jaehaera Targaryen. He was killed during the sack of Dragonpit by rioters much like many others on this list.

16. Shrykos: A she-dragon bound to Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen. She too was killed during the sack of Dragonpit by rioters much like many others on this list.

17. Grey Ghost: Grey Ghost was a wild dragon, had no rider and was vanquished and partially devoured by Sunfyre upon his return to Dragonstone.

18. Morning: Ridden by Rhaena Targaryen. She was one of the only 4 surviving dragons at the end of Dance of Dragons, and the only dragon under Targaryen control.

19. Silverwing: Initially ridden by Ulf the White. Silverwing was one of only four dragons still alive at the end of the Dance of the Dragons.

20. Sheepstealer: Ridden by Nettles. Both of them disappeared after the Dance of Dragons and hence their Sheepstealer’s fate is unknown.

21. Cannibal: A wild dragon with no rider who ever rode him disappeared after the Dance of Dragons.
