The Last of Us Season 2 is one of the most anticipated HBO releases. The show left us wondering what’s going to happen next to Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) Their journey across the United States in the wake of a plague that has killed a large population of people has kept the viewers glued to the show. Though we may wonder about the main characters’ fate, we don’t have to think about the show’s future. HBO ordered Season 2 of the show just two episodes after the series launched.

Plot and Cast of The Last of Us Season 2

In an interview with Consequence, Mazin confirmed: “The first season is the events of the first game. And if you have played the game, you can tell from watching the marketing materials that we’re also covering the events of the Left Behind DLC.”

  • Joel (Pedro Pascal)
  • Ellie (Bella Ramsey)
  • Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna)
  • Maria (Rutina Wesley)

Their roles are yet to be cast, along with characters including:

  •  Jesse (Dina’s ex-boyfriend)
  • Owen (Abby’s ex-boyfriend)
  • Lev and Yara (siblings who have been denounced by the Seraphite cult, and who team up with Abby)

If we consider that Season 2 will feature some of the events from The Last of Us Part II, we can assume a few storylines. Bella touched on this concept while speaking to Variety regarding season 2. “It’s darker. It’s really a story about revenge and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love,” she told the outlet. The second game jumps five years on from The Last of Us, with Joel and now 19-year-old Ellie living in Jackson, Wyoming. While Joel and brother Tommy are on a routine patrol, they meet Abby and save her from an infected horde.

They go to an outpost building used as a hideout by her group – former Fireflies, presently a militia group known as the WLF (Washington Liberation Front). The group attacks the brothers. A series of events leads Ellie and her girlfriend Dina to search for Joel and Tommy. Ellie arrives to see Abby killed Joel. Season 2 will likely focus on Ellie, Dina, Abby, and Tommy, with Joel appearing in some early episodes or flashbacks.

When Will It Come Out?

In May 2023, it was announced that the auditions for The Last of Us Season 2 had been put on hold due to the WGA strike. According to Variety, actors had been previously asked to read out scenes taken directly from the game The Last of Us Part II.  The scripts are also yet to be completed with the creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann pausing the production. “We were able to map out all of season two. And I also wrote and submitted the script for the first episode and sent it in [to HBO] around 10:30 or 10:40 pm right before the midnight [makes a “kajoomph” sound] and the [WGA] strike began,” Mazin said (via EW).

“I think it’s becoming essentially a near certainty that we won’t be able to start [filming] when we were hoping to start, which is upsetting,” Mazin continued. “We are all raring to go. This is what we are born to do.” “This is how we not only choose to live our lives, but I believe [how we] are compelled to live our lives. Otherwise, why the hell would we do this insane job? I can assure you it’s not for money.”

Bella Ramsey who plays Ellie, said, “I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next,” they revealed. “So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.” Though 2025 feels like a long wait, however, it’s a choice between a mediocre or a stellar quality Season 2.
