If there is any filmmaker who has a mastery of the romance-drama genre then it is Richard Linklater. If you don’t recognize him then I should provide you with some context. Have you seen the Before trilogy consisting of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight? Well, if you happen to love those three films then Linklater is the man behind them all. His other credits include Boyhood, Dazed and Confused, Waking Life, School of Rock!! and many more. In his recent two outings as director, Linklater has formed quite a connection with Top Gun 2 star Glen Powell as the actor has appeared in considerable roles. As it happens, Linklater has finally given Powell his due by taking him as the lead in his 20th directorial called Hit Man.

The film focuses on Professional killer Gary Johnson (played by Glen Powell) breaks protocol to help a desperate woman (played by Adria Arjona) trying to flee an abusive husband and finds himself falling for her. The film is supposed to be a romance-comedy, much like all the films in Linklater’s filmography. If you’re as intrigued as me for Linklater’s latest, then keep reading as I’ll tell you everything you need to know about this Netflix production.

Everything We Know About Hit Man!

Hit Man is directed by Richard Linklater, obviously. The film is based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth. Powell and Linklater have both penned down the script. This is a trend with the director. He is known for involving his actors in the scripting process, like in the Before Trilogy.

The Glen Powell starrer first premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2023. Recently, the film was also screened at the ongoing Sundance Film Festival. Just like most of the Linklater films, Hit Man has had an amazing critical reception with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% and an IMDb rating of 7.8/10. The film will have a limited theatrical release before it is made available on Netflix for streaming.

Plot wise also we know only as much as the premise. However, some websites have also further revealed that Powell’s character is not an actual hitman but rather an undercover Houston cop pretending to be a reliable hitman. The short teaser that Netflix unveiled a few days ago also just teased the vibe and feel of the film and nothing about the plot.

I have to admit the film feels fresh and full of life based on the trailer. Glen Powell is as charming as a man can be. After his successful outing in the form of Anyone But You in the rom-com genre, he seems to have become the new romance sweetheart with another success in the same genre. Hit Man will be available for streaming on Netflix from June 7th, 2024.
