The Witcher Season 4 and 5 Might Be The Last Ones, Reports Suggest

The Witcher Season 3 has ended as so has most fans’ will to continue with this series. Although the best of the story and series is yet to come, after two mediocre seasons, one horrible spin-off series, and Cavill’s exit, fans have no expectations from the series. As you may be aware, Henry Cavill’s role of Geralt of Rivia will now be carried forward by Liam Hemsworth, who has been prepping himself up for the role since a few months. Some fans who have been eagerly waiting for more Witcher content are quite excited to see how well Liam plays Geralt. However, today we have a slightly disheartening news for the fans of the series.

Why The Witcher Season 5 Will Likely Be The Last One

The Witcher Season 3 Volume 2 came out on Netflix in July 2023 and served as the final season for beloved Henry Cavill. And although some fans are eager to see Liam Hemsworth take on the mantle, it won’t be happening for a while. The production for Season 4 was set to begin during fall 2023 but got delayed due to writer’s and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Good news is that the writers strike have now ended, however the SAG-AFTRA strikes still continue. But this means that the writing on the season can finally be resumed. As for the actors, the filming was supposed to start later anyways.

A new update by Thanedd coup writer Javier Grillo, from his tweet on October 13th suggests that they’re finally back to writing The Witcher. At the moment Season 4 script is almost ready and the finalizing and polishing work is going on. The moment the script for Season 4 is finalized they’ll directly move on to writing Season 5. That’s right as reported earlier, Season 4 and Season 5 are planned to be produced back-to-back and hence, the strikes so far haven’t damaged the production process. It is possible that the filming for season 4 ends by mid 2024 and then after a short pause season 5’s filming begins in late 2024 as well.

Now moving on to the bad news, it is highly likely that The Witcher Season 5 turns out to be the final season. Although there’s no official confirmation about the same, many recent reports including Redanian Intelligence, have reported the same. Honestly, this doesn’t come off as a surprise considering how poorly fans received Cavill’s exit and season 3. Even though Season 3 was a hell lot more book accurate than season 2, it was boycotted and review bombed by the fans. Even critics appreciated season 3, but in the end it is all about fans. And if fans aren’t happy, a universe cannot survive.

If these reports are true and The Witcher ends with season 5, it will have to cover the final 3 books of the saga within 2 seasons. While that sounds like a lot, it might actually turn out to be a good thing. The Witcher books aren’t that long and the adaptable content can easily be covered in 2 seasons. As you may remember, the Blood of Elves had so less content to adapt that Netflix came up with an entirely original main plot for season 2. So, adapting 3 books in 2 seasons would allow Netflix to stay on course and minimize their creative additions which fans usually dislike. It is possible that the last 2 seasons turn out to be the best ones as not only will they backed by an interesting and epic source material, but will also leave less room for Netflix to meddle with the source.
