Avatar: The Way of Water is a worthy successor to the highest grossing film of all time- Avatar.  Just like its predecessor it has sealed its fate to break box office records right and left. Despite the 13 years long wait, the audiences haven’t gotten over the beautiful planet of Pandora. While the sequel may not have opened to the standards of other blockbusters, it certainly has not let its grip on the audiences slip by. There is no visionary like James Cameron in the industry and you should never bet against him. In just a span of 12 days, the sequel crossed the threshold of $1 Billion, one of the only three films of 2022 to do so. However, the film was not stopping here. It crossed Top Gun: Maverick’s remarkable $1.48 Billion and became the highest grossing film of 2022.

The film also entered in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Films of All Time, the third Cameron film on that list. The sequel is doing great business domestically but more than that it is roaring in globally as more than $1 Billion of its collections have come from international markets. Especially in Asian markets like India and China. Despite facing many hurdles given the Covid crisis in the land of the dragon, Avatar 2 has still managed to clench a healthy $162 Million till now. It has to be noted that the film was projected to earn double than this but the pandemic has put a damper on its illustrious run. In India, the film is only a day or two short of becoming the biggest Hollywood movie ever. It will soon beat Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (Rs. 367 Crores). As of now Cameron’s sequel has Rs. 365.30 Crores ($50.7 Million) in its kitty.

However, all these laurels are nothing in comparison to what this film has achieved now. I have used this line so much in the last few days but it gets truer and truer every time I use it.

Avatar: The Way of Water Is Unstoppable!

Avatar: The Way of Water has gotten a welcome boost in the weekend, this gave film the chance to draw more audiences in. The sequel earned around $45 Million across the weekend taking its domestic collections to $516 Million. On the other hand, the film did excessively well internationally taking its collections to $1.19 Billion totalling to a global cume of $1.7 Billion. These figures also meant that the film had climbed up the list of Top 10 Highest Grossing Films of All Time which it had recently entered.

The sequel crossed the lifetime collections of The Lion King ($1.66 Billion) and Jurassic World ($1.67 Billion) placing itself 7th on the list. Check out the complete list:

1) Avatar – $2.92B
2) Avengers: Endgame – $2.80B
3) Titanic – $2.20B
4) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens – $2.07B
5) Avengers: Infinity War – $2.05B
6) Spider-Man: No Way Home – $1.92B
7) Avatar: The Way of Water – $1.7B
8) Jurassic World – $1.67B
9) The Lion King – $1.66B
10) The Avengers – $1.52B

Avatar 2 is on the track of crossing $2 Billion, this will make it the only film post pandemic to achieve this milestone. Despite the sequel being the most expensive film ever produced ($460 Million), it has turned out to be profitable because of its extraordinary box office run. Once the sequel crosses $2 Billion, the competition is quite strong and there is no guarantee if it will be able to topple the top five, including 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion), 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($2.069 billion), 1997’s Titanic ($2.201 billion), and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion).

After $2 Billion I don’t know how much can the sequel pull through but if it is anything like its predecessor then it will hold strong and keep minting money.
