Predator is an American science fiction action anthology media franchise centered on the film series depicting humankind’s encounters with an intelligent race of extraterrestrial trophy-seeking, DNA, engineering military personnel known as the “Predator”. The series began with Predator (1987), which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and ever since then it has received 4 sequels and two crossovers with the Alien franchise. The latest film in the franchise was The Predator (2018) and now it is back with a 5th film Prey (2021) directed by Dan Trachtenberg and distributed by Hulu.

From the trailer, it is clear that the filmmakers have shifted their approach and adopted a more grounded and understated story as opposed to the big explosions of past Predator entries. Prey is set nearly 300 years before the events of the original Predator and the hunted in this film will be a Native American Comanche warrior and her entire tribe. The official synopsis of the film reads as follows:
“Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.”
The cast of the film includes mostly Native actors including Amber Midthunder (Roswell, New Mexico), Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (Sooyii), Michelle Thrush (The Journey Home), and Julian Black Antelope (Tribal). Prey is all set to debut on August 5, 2022, only on Hulu. This makes it the only entry in the franchise to directly debut on streaming services.
