The show created by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay is set in the Second-Age of Middle Earth, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Amazon reportedly spent a whopping $250M for the rights alone, while in addition the planned 5-season production plans cost around US$1billion.

LOTR: ROP 5 Fully Planned Seasons

The co-creator of the show J.D.Payne, recently revealed to an outlet that the show is completely planned from beginning to the end across the 5 seasons.

We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be. The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas – this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end. There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5″

The Show-runner also confirmed the show will be true to Tolkein’s vision and scope.

The pressure would drive us insane if we didn’t feel like there was a story here that didn’t come from us. It comes from a bigger place. It came from Tolkien and we’re just the stewards of it. We trust those ideas so deeply, because they’re not ours. We’re custodians, at best.”

“Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the series is based on author J. R. R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth. It begins during a time of relative peace and covers all the major events of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the last alliance between Elves and Men. These events take place over thousands of years in Tolkien’s original stories, but are condensed for the series”
