We’re in the last month of the year and based on the movie releases lined up this week I can finally say something that I’ve waited six months to say. Barbie movie was the biggest surprise of 2023. Despite the talented cast and crew, no one thought that the film would become such a pop culture phenomenon. However, coupled with Oppenheimer the Greta Gerwig directorial started a movement for original cinema and shattered records for doing so. Barbie has grossed $1.44 billion at the worldwide box office. The film toppled The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.365 billion to claim the number one spot of 2023 box office, and based on all the remaining releases, I don’t think so any other film will even touch Barbie’s collection. With such impressive theatrical performance, it was natural that the film won’t have an early streaming release date. And, it was a long wait, however, after four long months Barbie has finally set a HBO Max premiere date.

Barbie Is Coming To HBO Max In December!

Barbie Reviews Roundup and Rotten Tomatoes Score - A Perfect Summer Blockbuster

As per a new report from Variety, Warner Bros. have finally revealed the official streaming release date of their blockbuster film Barbie. The studio teased the viewers a lot to give any confirmation on the matter, leading to massive speculations. However, after so much drama the studio has revealed that the film will arrive on their in house platform Max on December 15th, something which many publications including When To Stream had already predicted. Last we also did an entire report why December 15th seems like the only option for Warner Bros. to release the Greta Gerwig directorial.

Upon Barbie’s streaming release, Max will also release a version of the film that includes American Sign Language interpretation. A recent report also revealed that even though Barbie emerged as the winner in 2023’s biggest box office battle, Oppenheimer did out perform the Margot Robbie starrer when it comes to VOD. Oppenheimer brought in 388,000 views compared to Barbie’s comparatively lower estimated 363,000 views. While losing out to Oppenheimer on its VOD opening, Barbie’s streaming numbers still represent an impressive total, coupled by the fact that the film maintained its status in the top 5 at the box office for several weeks after first dropping on VOD.

The summer of 2023 had the Barbenheimer frenzy. Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally of $4.028 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years.

The film’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.

Barbie will start streaming on Max from December 15th, 2023.
