I think we’ve all grown watching Roland Emmerich’s 1998 classic Godzilla, at least I did. My first interaction with the monster was in this film. Despite its flaws I loved the film and still do. I also liked Gareth Edwards’ 2014 reboot which started a new universe of Kaijus, now known as Monsterverse. Anyone who has even a little idea about Godzilla, knows that the character originally belongs to Japan and American studios have simply adopted him. The iconic monster is supposed to be the metaphorical representation of Japan’s horrors back in WWII. Anyone who has seen any recent Godzilla movies, has only come across the American version of the character. However, there is a new movie around the block, produced by Toho, their 33rd Godzilla movie called Godzilla Minus One which will show you Japan’s Godzilla.

The movie has been recipient to rave reviews online and has also had amazing box office collections worldwide. However, as there is not a big studio behind the movie the film is not available everywhere to watch, including India. Fans of Godzilla are desperate to know how they watch the film if there is no theatrical option. However, it looks like fans will have to wait a while for the film to release online.

Godzilla Minus One Will Take A Long Time To Release Online!

Japan’s Amazon Prime Video confirmed that Godzilla Minus One will be available to buy or purchase on its website in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) where the streaming giant was promoting the recent American-made MonsterVerse films, followed by marketing for Godzilla Minus One’s theatrical release (translated to English). However, there was no indication given on when will the film be available of purchase. The film will also most likely debut on other digital media outlets like Vudu and Apple iTunes but again, when is the question.

So, now the only way to get an idea of Minus One’s digital release window is to take a look at other live-action Toho-distributed films like Shin Ultraman, which was released in theaters (in Japan) on May 13th, 2022. The film later premiered exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Japan on November 18th, 2022, with the physical media release not happening until April 12th, 2023. It was made available in the United States on July 4th, and on July 11th, 2023, when it was released on DVD and Blu-ray.

If we’re to follow a similar timeline for the Takashi Yamazaki directorial then, Godzilla Minus One won’t be available to watch at home in the US until late 2024, as late as December maybe. Although, there is one key difference between Shin Ultraman and Godzilla Minus One. The monster flick received a 2,300-theater opening weekend in the US and Canada on December 1st. This would presumably also push North America’s digital release date forward, possibly to June 2024, about 190 days after opening in theaters.

Godzilla Minus One is currently playing in theatres near you.
