It was disclosed last month that Netflix is creating a drama series based on the Horizon video game series for PlayStation. The “early development” of the live-action adaptation appears to be much further along than previously thought. Even though the sci-fi RPG series only consists of two titles, it has been a huge success for PlayStation. In order to create Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerilla left the Killzone franchise. The game was a huge commercial success and received acclaim from both fans and critics. Sony was able to pitch Horizon Forbidden West as one of the first significant titles on the PlayStation 5 as the demand for a sequel grew quite quickly. Now, PlayStation is also supporting Horizon: Call of the Mountain as a premier PlayStation VR2 game.
Netflix’s Horizon Series Expected To Wrap Up Filming By Early 2023
Considering everything, it seems reasonable that Sony is attempting to cash in on the IP by extending it beyond gaming. The Ronin reports that Netflix will film its Horizon series in Toronto and other cities in and surrounding Ontario, with production reportedly set to begin this August. The show is also expected to wrap up filming in March 2023, so it’s possible the series will be ready for holiday 2023 or early 2024.
There isn’t much official information available about the show as of now, but we have detailed everything we know so far. However, insider Jeff Grubb claimed it would essentially act as a prequel to the games and depict humanity before its demise. This would imply that the series is set centuries before the games, which offers Netflix the liberty to experiment creatively with it.
With production designer Mark Steel joining the crew, who has previously worked on other Netflix projects, including Locke & Key and The Umbrella Academy, preparation for Horizon has already begun.
Though a recent website listing detailed the show’s main crew, we still await official word on the showrunners, writers, directors, and performers. Before the show starts filming in a month, we’ll likely get additional info, including casting updates, official plot details, and other conformations.
