Oppenheimer Becomes 2nd Highest Grossing R-Rated Movie Ever

Last week Oppenheimer slid into fifth on the all-time R-rated global box office list thanks to its total of $722.8 million worldwide, passing the 2017 horror blockbuster – It. Once the film breached the $700 million mark everyone thought the film would slow down but the recent China release kept it afloat. Oppenheimer also had an uninterrupted IMAX run till the end of August. Moreover, the movie further boosted its box-office gross last weekend thanks to National Cinema Day on Aug. 27, where fans can cop discounted tickets to Oppenheimer and other summer blockbusters. Oppenheimer’s next target was  Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Reloaded which is at 4th in the Top 5 list with $738 million. It turns out the film had such an amazing weekend that not only did Oppenheimer trump The Matrix Reloaded but also climbed up much higher in the list than expected.

Oppenheimer Achieves Another Milestone At The Box Office!

According to Box Office Mojo, Oppenheimer has collected $788.2 million until now. This means that the Christopher Nolan directorial has become the second highest grossing R-rated film in history beating out Deadpool 2’s $786 million. The top 5 R-rated list now looks like:

  1. Joker (2019) – $1.07 billion
  2. Oppenheimer (2023) – $788.2 million
  3. Deadpool 2 (2018) – $786 million
  4. Deadpool (2016) – $781 million
  5. The Matrix Reloaded – $738 million

Despite having tough competition in markets like India, Oppenheimer has managed to collect a hefty sum. The Nolan blockbuster has crossed the ₹150 crore mark in India despite facing off box office juggernauts like Gadar 2, OMG 2, Jailer and Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The $800 million mark looks inevitable based on current market trends which means the film can topple Inception’s $837.1 million lifetime collection. This would make the film the highest grossing Nolan film apart from the Dark Knight Trilogy. Oppenheimer has also secured a place in the highest grossing films of 2023. While Barbie is completely out of reach but the Nolan flick can definitely surpass Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Check out the full list below:

  1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie – $1.36 billion
  2. Barbie – $1.34 billion
  3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – $845.5 million
  4. Oppenheimer – $788.2 million
  5. Fast X – $704.7 million

The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
