Top Gun: Maverick Breaks Viewership Records On Paramount Plus!

The sequel for Top Gun was in the works for a long time, it never seemed to have cohesively work out. Initially, Paramount had plans to bring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer back with director Tony Scott for the sequel in 2010. However, the tragic suicide of the director in 2012 pressed a long pause on the project. It wasn’t until 2017 when Joseph Kosinski came on board to helm the sequel. The original plan was to release the sequel in July 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic had different plans. With multiple delays and reshoots, Maverick finally returned on May 27th 2022 and boy was it worth it. The film enjoyed a massive box office surge despite the skepticism of audiences regarding theatres. It was lauded by the critics for its great action sequences and most importantly the emotional weight carried by the film.

A lot of people, including me found it better than the original. Paramount enjoyed the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick as it grossed over $1.48 Billion worldwide, as even when the film was available on digital, the film continued to rule the box office. The film broke many box office records throughout its run. Maverick finally went off the theatres as there were many big releases lined-up like Black Adam and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Maverick really ruled the summer box office and continued its reign after that as well and it looks like the film is still not done as Maverick continues its reign on Paramount’s streaming platform Paramount Plus!

Top Gun: Maverick Has The Biggest Debut On Paramount Plus!

According to a recent report by Deadline, Top Gun: Maverick continued its magical run on Paramount Plus as well, audiences are not over Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski’s sequel as they continue to shower their love. As Maverick debuted on the streaming platform on 22 December 2022, the film has enjoyed much success as it has become the most watched film domestically on Paramount Plus. The sequel surpassed 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog’s streaming debut by 60%.

Along with Maverick, Tom Cruise’s other films like the Mission Impossible franchise and the original Top Gun received similar boosts of 140% and 400% respectively. Both Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins and Paramount+ Chief Programming Officer Tanya Giles praised the film’s success, citing it as evidence of the potential for the studio’s current release strategy. Maverick remains the highest grossing film of 2022 until now before Avatar: The Way of Water takes over.

Top Gun: Maverick is the 5th highest grossing movie on the domestic box office ($716 Million) behind Avatar ($749 Million). Despite having no significant hype, the Top Gun sequel has managed to rise above Marvel giants like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, all of then were mediocre ventures and Top Gun prevailed over them because of its quality.

Top Gun: Maverick is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount Plus.
