The Batman is the one of only two DC films that have released this year. Surprisingly the film was better than any Marvel content we have gotten so far. The film is not part of the DC Extended Universe (now DCU), it is similar to Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and Todd Philips’ Joker Franchise where events are happening in its own microcosmic universe. The film was helmed by Matt Reeves who has previously directed films like Planet of the Apes, War on the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield and Let Me In. The Batman was one of the first films of the year to taste critical and box office success. The film was praised for its gritty tone, amazing visuals and deep characters. However, we all know the film wasn’t flawless. The obvious problems in the third act were undeniable.

Still considering everything and especially the powerful first 2 acts the film made its mark. The film currently has a score of 7.9/10 on IMDb and 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was made on a hefty budget of $185 Million and the film earned $770.8 Million worldwide. Given the predicament theatre releases were at the time when the film released, its performance is praiseworthy. The film was an all out success for Warner Bros. but it looks like the movie is not done yet. After dazzling everyone in theatres, it looks like the film has left its footprint on the Academy as the Matt Reeves’ film has been shortlisted for 3 Oscars category.

The Batman Is Not Nominated For Best Original Score!

The Academy Awards of Merit announced their pre-nominations today and it looks like despite having a lackluster 2022 which only included two movies (The Batman and Black Adam), considering that Black Adam was a box office failure, it looks The Batman is still keeping the studio alive in the Oscar race. I the film should’ve been shortlisted for more than three categories and one is something, I’m really pissed about, but let’s discuss that later. So, without further ado, let’s see in which categories has the film impressed the Academy.

Make-Up and Hairstyling

All Quiet on the Western Front

Sound

All Quiet on the Western Front

Visual Effects

All Quiet on the Western Front
Avatar: The Way of Water
The Batman
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
Jurassic World Dominion

Thirteen Lives
Top Gun: Maverick

In the three categories that it is shortlisted I’m certain that the film will make it through one of them – Visual Effects. I believe the film had amazing visuals and it is destined to be nominated for the category given the competition. However, I’m also certain that the film is going to lose the category to Avatar: The Way of Water. Trust me, no one is going to beat that film. I believe it has a great chance to be nominated for sound as well but I’m not sure about that. Make-Up and Hairstyling, I think the film will not make it to the next level.

The next level being the official nominations which would be revealed on 24th January 2023. It is important to know that these are simply pre-nominations and out of all these shortlisted films, only five would be the official nominees. That being said, the Academy has turned a blind eye to The Batman in one major category that fans were sure that the film stands a chance in winning – Best Original Score. I too believe that The Batman should have been shortlisted and nominated for this category. The score by Michael Giacchino was really enchanting.

The 95th Oscars Ceremony would take place on 12th march 2023. The Batman is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
