Madame Web was created by late writer Dennis O’Neil. The original Madame Web — real name Cassandra Webb — first appeared in 1980’s Amazing Spider-Man #210. The mantle of Madame Web was later taken up by Julia Carpenter, who is perhaps best known for being the second Spider-Woman. Created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, Julia first appeared as Spider-Woman as part of the Secret Wars limited series in 1984. Julia became Madame Web in 2010’s Amazing Spider-Man #637 following the death of Cassandra Webb. Now that this storyline is being adapted into a film, it becomes tricky to know all the characters in this spider-verse. The newly released trailer by Sony introduced the new Spider-Girl. What’s the deal with her? Let’s find out.

Madame Web: New Spider-Girl Explained!

The first trailer of Madame Web has released and it introduces a number of new spider superheroes, one of which is Isabel Merced’s Anya Corazon aka Spider-Girl from the comics. In its short runtime, the trailer had few glimpses of her new superhero suit sprinkled throughout. Her goggles used to mask her face akin to some of her comic appearances. She appears in a black and silver suit while throwing some form of spinning red disc in combat, perhaps teasing an arsenal of spider-like gadgets at her disposal.

Merced will be part of a team of Spider powered superheroes recruited by Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web to take on Ezekiel Sims, joining her are Sydney Sweeney’s Julia Carpenter and Celeste O’Connor’s Mattie Franklin. Each of the heroes was confirmed to have some connection to Johnson’s Madame Web, with Corazon’s coming into their mutual apartment building.

The film stars Dakota Johnson, as well as fellow co-stars Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts and most recently Severance’s star Adam Scott. The film is to be directed by S.J. Clarkson and the screenplay of the film is written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, with a previous draft having been penned by Kerem Sanga.

Madame Web is slated to release on 16th February 2024.
