Westworld was created in 2016 by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and was an instant hit in 2016 with its 1st Season was highly praised for its truly mind boggling twists and multiple non-linear narratives. However, the series took a major drop in its 2nd Second season when its over ambitious multi-timeline structure led to its undoing. In the 3rd Season the show tried to fix itself but faced a new problem of making the story too alien for the audience by setting it in the Real World. However in season 4, Westworld finally found some of its lost magic back.

The season ended on a surprising note where it seemed like the only one left is Dolores and the next season would entirely be set in the Sublime where Dolores will run a final test. Basically we come full circle – back to season 1, just the experimenters and subjects have changed. The end of Season 4 suggested that season 5 would be the last for the show. However, due to the low viewership ratings of the show and the high production value, there was threat looming over a fifth season being greenlit. However, this new update suggests otherwise.

Westworld Season 5: Creators in talks with HBO Executives!

Westworld Season 5 Release Date + Season 4 Ending Explained

It has been 2 months since Westworld Season 4 ended its run but HBO still hasn’t renewed it. Westworld creators had made an appearance at NYCC’22 and there they talked about the potential fifth season of the show. “We always planned for a fifth and final season,” Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan said during New York Comic-Con this weekend (via Deadline). “We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them.” Co-creator Lisa Joy previously told Deadline, “Jonah [Nolan] and I have always had an ending in mind that we hope to reach. We have not quite reached it yet.”

All previous seasons of Westworld were renewed while the current season was going on. This is the first time where a season of Westworld hasn’t renewed even after the current season ended its run. This is bad news for Westworld Season 5 as it may never the light of day. However, now considering the names, money and fan following of the show it seems odd for HBO to pull the plug on the show just before the final season. Then again, with everything going on with Warner Bros. Discovery anything is possible.

Lisa Joy had mentioned during the finale of Westworld Season 4 that the creators always had an ending in mind but they needed another season to let the show come to that conclusion naturally. “We never broke [the show] with an exact number of seasons left,” Joy said. “But then when we were writing this season, we were like, ‘We can get it up to the precipice before we round it out with what we had always planned would happen in the fifth season.’ So we have, like Dolores [Evan Rachel Wood], one more story to tell – and whether we get to tell it, we’ll see.”

“We always had this idea that, in the last season, we would let the person who was at the whim of other people’s stories and predilections and desires to be able to write a story of her own and really flip the test back,” Joy added. “In terms of a launching pad for that [in season 5], the old regimes and the old world and a lot of the old players have been dismantled and destroyed [in season 4]. So, in this final test, what is Dolores gonna do? How will the world look different? How will she, as the final tester, create a different universe in a different game and a different way?”

All four Seasons of Westworld are available for streaming on HBO Max or Disney+
