Peaky Blinders Named the Hardest Series to Follow For US Viewers

Tom Hardy’s accent is the hardest to follow for American viewers, according to a recent Preply survey (via The Wrap). UK gangster series “Peaky Blinders,” set in post-WWI Birmingham show, was named the most difficult TV show to understand. Hardy plays the recurring character Alfie Solomons on the Netflix series, which also stars Irish actor Cillian Murphy.

Fans of Hardy won’t be surprised by the results, as the actor is known for portraying roles that demand him to mumble. He presently features in the sixth and last season of “Peaky Blinders” on Netflix, and later this year, he will appear in Gareth Evans’ “Havoc.” Hardy was followed by Sofia Vergara, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sean Connery, Johnny Depp, Jackie Chan, Ozzy Osbourne, and Benedict Cumberbatch on the poll’s acting front.

Peaky Blinders Survey Shows That Audiences Blame Tom Hardy’s Accent

The majority of TV shows that take place in Europe are the most difficult to comprehend. The American audience ranked “Peaky Blinders” first in terms of difficulty to grasp, followed by “Derry Girls,” “Game of Thrones,” “Outlander,” and “Downton Abbey.”

As the project examined American film and television audiences’ use of subtitles, it found that viewing television with subtitles has become increasingly popular, especially among younger audiences. The poll surveyed 1200 respondents and revealed that 50% of Americans mostly use subtitles, while 70% of Gen Z viewers said they used subtitles most of the time.

The survey then attempts to delve deeper into the reasons for the new trend – most subtitle users mentioned practical issues with hearing audio and comprehending the shows they view. Muddled audio was identified by 72% of subtitle users as a major worry, while actor accents were difficult to understand by 61% of users.

Other reasons for having subtitles included trying to watch tv quietly, using them to keep one’s attention on a single screen, and occasionally even using them to learn a new language. The poll also considered viewing patterns as a potential factor, pointing out that younger viewers are considerably more likely to use mobile devices to consume content while out in public.
