Top 10 Characters From Castlevania Nocturne Ranked

The smash hit show Castlevania ended its 4 season run in 2021 and now 2 years later, we have now gotten a spin-off sequel called Castlevania: Nocturne. Based in France, 1792 during the height of the French Revolution, Nocturne follows the exploits of Richter Belmont, the last descendant of the long-fabled family of vampire hunters. Just like Castlevania, this spin-off also features loads of vampires, monsters, sorcerers, hunters, and numerous other characters, as it ultimately these characters and their motivations which define any dark fantasy story. So now that it is out, let us analyse the very best characters in Netflix’ Castlevania: Nocturne ranked by likeability, complexity, and sheer badassery. Beware that some major spoilers might follow below. Also check out our review here.

10. Alucard

With just 1 min 30 sec of screentime and 2 dialogues, Alucard technically has no right to be on this list. But you just can’t ignore him, as his entrance has the capacity to drive everyone nuts and is arguably the best moment of the series. Therefore, it is really hard to resist not adding him to the list. The stark-fan favorite has returned to Castlevania with a new incredible design with white hair and even more pale skin. He has also learned how to deliver some badass lines and fans surely got chills when he said, “I am Dracula, son of Dracula. And if you fight me, YOU WILL DIE like thousands of vampire before you.”

9. Mizrak

Mizrak started off as a side character but quickly became one of the most likeable characters on the show. He is one of the most honorable and pure characters on the show who is a man of God and incredibly loyal but still stands up for what’s right. He is basically a skilled soldier who isn’t brainwashed and knows what’s right and such characters are always root worthy. That aside, he is also one of the bravest characters of the show who is ready to throw himself against even Erzebet.

8. Maria Renard

Maria, though a formidable fighter, spends most of her time in the show being the damsel in distress. However, she serves as an integral part of the narrative and therefore cannot be ignored. That aside, she did have some slick action sequences throughout the season as well adding even more creativity to Castlevania’s arsenal. Also, she is quite likeable as character as she is sweet, empathetic, and understanding but also never backs away from a challenge and has a strong will. She backs her beliefs and is fully aware of the difference between right and wrong, unlike her father.

7. Abbot Emanuel

Abbot is one of those layered and conflicted characters which made the original Castlevania stand out. Being a priest, he is a man of God who does everything in his power to save his faith which even includes making deal with the demons. He serves most of his time on the show being an antagonist and trying to justify his evil actions in the name of God. But it is hard to completely despise him as he loves Maria and is often conflicted with the idea of what’s right. Struggling with direction, he makes some poor choices throughout the season but ultimately, he turns out be exactly the kind of complex character you’d expect from dark fantasy story.

6. Juste Belmont

Juste appears for only episodes in Season 1 but has a significant impact on the narrative as well as Richter. Not only did he indirectly help Richter unlock his magical abilities, he also shed more light on the Belmont clan. That aside, he is one of the most powerful and skilled characters in the season and his introduction bar brawl is nothing short of perfection. While he surprisingly didn’t show up in the final two episodes on the season, we are sure to see more of him upcoming season.

5. Erzsebet Bathory

While she isn’t remotely as complex or well written as Dracula, she is an absolutely terrifying opponent. She is so powerful that none of the characters in the series were able to even touch her, let alone fight her. Being dubbed as the “Messiah” and the “Devourer of Light”, she proved worthy of the immense build up in the first half of the season. From literally moving the Moon, to beating every character on the show without even lifting a finger, Erzsebet Bathory is the final boss we are never ready enough for.

4. Tera

Tera is everything Maria is and more. The noble soul didn’t even flinch while offering herself in place of Maria and fans are seriously distraught by her her fate. It would be hard to see her turn into a vampire and potentially stand against our heroes in the upcoming season. She is the most likeable character on the show who is loving, compassionate, and kind, while at the same time being a decently skilled sorcerer.

3. Richter Belmont

Unlike Trevor Belmont from Castlevania, Richter isn’t a battle hardened badass but a young man who struggles with childhood trauma. Often underconfident and afraid, Richter sometimes goes as far as to abandon his friends but that is what makes his character unique. He grows and learns throughout the season and after his Super Saiyan like awakening in Episode 6, he quickly becomes one of the most powerful and confident characters in the series. Although, the extent of his abilities is yet to tested, he makes up for a pretty decent, if not a great protagonist.

2. Annette

Annette, hands down, has the best character motivation in the series. Having gone through a rough childhood, Castelvania: Nocturne offers her a side character arc of her own involving her childhood vampire master as well as another side arc involving her friend Eduoard. She has a lot going on throughout the season making her one of the most interesting and motivated characters. That aside, being the descendant of Gods Ogun and Orunmila, she is also one of the strongest characters on the show. From ability to manipulate Earth, rocks, and metals, to her swordsmanship skills, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Honourable Mention – Julia Belmont

With barely 6 minutes of screentime, Julia Belmont proved to be one of the most of powerful characters on show, nearly beating Olrox. She also proved to be a caring mother as well as a loyal Belmont, who wants to carry forward the clan’s legacy. From what we’ve seen so far, you can be sure we aren’t done with her yet and will learn more about her in the upcoming season.

1. Olrox

Just as Netflix defined him, he is powerful, seductive, and plays by his own rules. His on screen presence adds a sophisticated gravitas to the show which even exceeds Princess Carmilla’s aura in Castlevania. He is usually a calm, composed, and reasonable vampire who does no evil in the show throughout except killing Julia Belmont as revenge. He has also shown utmost passion and loyalty towards his loved ones, especially Mizrak, and in the end, he fights alongside our heroes. Olrox is also quite a complex character who is yet to be cracked fully and that is what makes him even more mysterious and interesting. All that aside, he is also the second most powerful character on the show, not counting Alucard. He basically toys with Richter throughout the season, even after Richter awakens his magical powers. Every second Olrox was on screen, the season was a sheer delight to watch.

And that concludes our list! Hope you enjoyed it. We will also soon come up with a list of most powerful Castelvania: Nocturne characters as well. So stay tuned!
