Asteroid City: Wes Anderson's Appeal Drops The Adult Rating

Wes Anderson is one of the most influential directors of this generation. The man’s a visionary like no other. The visual symmetry in his filmmaking and the kind of narratives that drive his stories are truly unique. Whenever a new Wes Anderson movie comes out everyone looks forward to it as it won’t be anything like the previous one. His most recent venture – Asteroid City is right around the corner. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it. The film’s trailer was released a while ago and it was as quirky as it could’ve been. Asteroid City has been in the news recently because the film board gave it an R-Rating restricting only the adult audiences to enjoy the film. Wes Anderson had filed an appeal to drop the R-Rating and it looks like his plea has been heard.

Asteroid City R-Rating Has Been Dropped!

In February 2023, Asteroid City was reviewed by the MPAA for necessary certification where it received an R-Rating for “brief graphic nudity”. This didn’t sit well with the filmmaker as he thought the board was too harsh. He immediately lodged an appeal at the MPAA’s Appeals Board. Now after 3 months, Next Best Picture’s Will Mavity shares that Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City has managed to drop the R-Rating and now has a mature family friendly PG-13 rating. This decision was taken by the MPAA board after a two months reviewing process.

The updated rating description states, “brief graphic nudity, smoking, and some suggestive material.” The word graphic nudity is rarely used in Hollywood, the only PG-13 movie ever to use this term before was 2006’s Golden Door. The only other instance, where this term was used was in Bill Murray’s Broken Flowers where a woman very briefly enters a room fully naked, smiles at Murray’s character, and leaves the room, with almost her entire naked body visible.

This is where the term graphic nudity was coined. Asteroid City’s graphic nudity will also be in a non sexual context but probably be full frontal as suggested by the previous uses of the term. In fact, a report states that the nudity came as a part of the immigration process, with several males having their genitals visible very briefly and some pubic hair sticking out.
