I think at this point everyone is aware that there is a live action Barbie movie on its way. The film is the first to adapt the iconic Mattel toyline into a live action flick. The film is helmed by Greta Gerwig who is an Oscar winning director for Lady Bird. She has co-written the film with Marriage Story’s writer-director Noah Baumbach. Not to mention Gerwig and Baumbach have been in a romantic relationship from 2011. So them writing a Rom-Com like this could be really great. The film is produced by Warner Bros. and stars Margot Robbie in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
The film has been well into production since Spring. The filming of the film has been going on in London under tight security, which has to be joke seeing the amount of set photos we’ve gotten that have revealed so many sets and different outfits of Barbie and Ken. Apart from them, the official first looks revealed by Warner Bros. shows us Robbie’s Barbie driving a pink convertible in a pink set and Gosling’s Ken in a denim vest flaunting his physique. However, it looks like now we don’t have to scavenge for getting glimpses of the movie as Warner Bros. has just released the movie’s first teaser.
Barbie Movie Trailer has Philosophy!
The teaser doesn’t show us much from the film, just a few glimpses that give us just enough to understand the treatment and genre of the film. Much of the trailer is telling the audience of why the Barbie figure is so important. Before the Barbie doll, little girls used to play with dolls like babies, they used to change them, take care of it etc. which was basically society preparing them for motherhood that will eventually come in her.
However, after the Barbie doll came into the picture, it prepared and taught girls how form romantic relationships with boys, it taught them how to be consumers and all. Greta Gerwig and Warner Bros. advertising team has taken advantage of this as it is evident in the teaser. Almost the entire trailer looks like a Marvel’s. Margot Robbie appears as Barbie and we see small glimpses of Simu Liu, Ryan Gosling and Nucti Gatwa. Apart from the star studded cast there is another thing that has gotten me excited for the film.
Robbie and Mackay being in the same film. Both actresses have famously been called each others’ doppelgangers and I think everyone can see why. It’ll be really fun to see both of them on screen together. The Barbie film seems to be banking on nostalgia and as well as make sufficient changes for the contemporary audience to get on board. The film is off to a great start as it was already riled up twitter with its spicy first looks and set photos. Hope the film is as spicy as the snippets we’ve seen until now.
