Monkey Man is an upcoming action-thriller movie starring Dev Patel. The film is the actor’s directorial debut and with producers like Jordan Peele, Samarth Sahni and Joe Thomas. Patel has harvested this story from the heart of his roots as Monkey Man is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage. The basic plot of the film focuses on Kid (Dev Patel), an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

All the hype for the film that you see now is thanks to the first trailer of the film. It was an instant hit with western and Indian audiences thanks to its terrific visuals and outstanding soundtrack. With only a month for the film’s official release, some audiences are getting a chance to catch it first at its premiere. Let’s hear from them if the film lives up to the hype.

Monkey Man Is A Critical Success!

Overall, all the reviews are amazing. The film is described as the new age John Wick. At the time of writing, the film has debuted with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% and also an impressive IMDb rating of 8.8/10. Read the reviews below:

Owen Gleiberman (Variety)“Patel wants to make his story “real,” but he hasn’t given it depth; he’s just given it a kind of dark-side-of-Mumbai longueurs along with fashionably jagged cinematography.”

Tessa Smith (Mama’s Geeky)“A gory revenge story packed with intense action, stunning cinematography, and a fire score, but also delivers a heart-crushing story that viewers will not be expecting. Dev Patel has created something that will surely be an inspiration to future films.” Original Score: 4.5/5

Lovia Gyarkye (Hollywood Reporter) “Patel makes a fine hero. The actor is a consistently charming presence whose capabilities have only grown since Skins and his breakthrough role in Slumdog.”

Chase Hutchinson (TheWrap)“Just as Kid is reborn in the film, so too is Patel. It requires fighting a bloody battle, but what a beautiful sight it is to see. Forget John Wick, let no one doubt the power of action star Dev Patel again.”

Matthew Monagle (The Playlist)“If the results are more than a little preachy, it’s only because Devl Patel cares so passionately about the issues he spotlights and the cinematic language of violence he uses to discuss them.” Original Score: B-

Brian Tallerico (RogerEbert.com) ““Monkey Man” may be an origin story for a future action franchise character, but it feels more to me like an origin story for a future action star and director.” Original Score: 3/4

Dan Bayer (Next Best Picture)“Watch out, world. Dev Patel has officially announced himself as an Action Auteur and is ready to kick the genre into the future.” Original Score: 8/10

Adrian Horton (Guardian)“It isn’t and hasn’t been the smoothest ride, but as proof of concept for Patel’s action movie bona fides in front of and behind the camera, consider Monkey Man a success.” Original Score: 3/5

Robert Daniels (Screen International) “As a star, Patel has rarely been better. And as a director, he grants an intoxicatingly gruesome vision of the kind of gritty vehicles he could steer in the future.”

Ed Travis (Cinapse)“Monkey Man marks the arrival of a new era for Dev Patel and I’ll gladly go wherever he leads me cinematically from here on out.”

Perri Nemiroff (Collider)“Monkey Man is a true mixed bag. The action is staggeringly impressive, both from a visual and storytelling standpoint, but the material in between runs the risk of deflating the experience via pacing problems and narrative confusion.” Original Score: 6/10

Nathan McVay (HeyUGuys)“Brilliant, brutal and a sign of beautiful things to come. Dev Patel is a talent to behold, and Monkey Man is as impressive a cinematic achievement as we are going to see this year.” Original Score: 5/5

Jamie Broadnax (Black Girl Nerds)“‘Monkey Man’ is action-packed, full of thrills, and deliciously violent. If you have a knack for the action genre, you’ll absolutely love what this film will bring.” Original Score: 4/5

Along with Dev Patel in the lead, Monkey Man stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Makarand Deshpande, Ashwini Kalsekar, Vipin Sharma and Sharito Copley.
