Woody Allen

Woody Allen has taken a hit at cancel culture in his most recent interview with Variety, where he discusses his career, plans for retirement, and how he stays unaffected in spite of the public opinion against him.

The director of a few iconic movies in the landscape of American Cinema, like Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine is onto his 50th film, and had been one of the luminary auteurs but in recent years has fallen out of public opinion because of some severe allegations against him, and his personal life. In his interview with Variety, Allen dismissed cancel culture as silly, by stating that :

“I feel if you’re going to be canceled, this is the culture to be canceled by. I just find that all so silly. I don’t think about it. I don’t know what it means to be canceled. I know that over the years everything has been the same for me. I make my movies. What has changed is the presentation of the films. You know, I work and it’s the same routine for me. I write the script, raise the money, make the film, shoot it, edit it, it comes out. The difference is not is not from cancel culture. The difference is the way they present the films. It’s that that’s the big change.”

Dylan Farrow and Ronan Farrow

It is important to note that Allen has not been cancelled over something as trivial as he makes it seem. Allen has been accused of sexual assault by his once step-daughter, Dylan Farrow. The director reiterated that two major investigations have found him not guilty, although he has not been in contact with Dylan and her brother Ronan in a long time. Allen is also married to Soon-yi Previn, the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow and Andre Previn, who he had met when she was in her 11th grade.

Allen was at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of his 50th film, Coup De Chance. He also spoke about his retirement stating that he has not yet decided whether he will retire, although he had insisted last year that he does not intend to stop making movies anytime soon.
