Deadpool has to be the most successful super-hero outside of the MCU. Till the time Fox had rights to Marvel characters, they hired Bryan Singer to create a live action adaptation of the X-Men which at first worked really well, however, after that started falling apart they had a small reboot for the franchise that replaced everyone with time travel except for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Of course, I mean can you imagine someone else playing Wolverine than Jackman? Ryan Reynolds appeared in cameos as Deadpool in these movies but for some reason never got his solo movie until he made a fan film which went viral. Finally in 2016, the first Deadpool film came out and it was a box office and critical success which naturally spawned a sequel because at that time it was the only X-Men movie working at the box office.

In 2018, Deadpool 2 came out and it was the highest grossing R-Rated film until it was dethroned by Joker in 2019. At the same time, Logan which was another R-Rated X-Men movie did incredibly well at the box office and also gained critical acclaim. So it looks like X-Men films are better if they’re R-Rated. It has been many years since we got a Deadpool 3 but we’re finally getting a threequel that too with Deadpool being in the MCU. While that is amazing, it did raise the question will it be R-Rated? Well, considering Disney’s policy it seems like it but Marvel President seems to be sold on the R-Rated idea.

Deadpool 3 To Be MCU’s First R-Rated Movie!

Deadpool 3 Release Date and Hugh Jackman Wolverine Returns!

While promoting MCU’s latest movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Marvel President Kevin Feigi spoke with Entertainment Weekly where he was asked about the upcoming Deadpool 3 and he shared his excitement about the project while also slipping some very important piece of information about the film’s rating, “It’s amazing. And we’ve got Hugh Jackman coming back for our first ‘Deadpool’ film within the MCU. That’s our first R-rated film. To have Hugh come back is incredible.”

Feige further added, “For me, personally, that is where I started. I remember sitting behind the camera — well behind the camera — at his audition for the film. It was his first on-set audition, and he flew up to Toronto to do a read with Anna Paquin. For him, and for me, and I think for all of the fans of Marvel, it’s unbelievable what has happened in those 23 years. It’s very full-circle having him come back in this new ‘Deadpool’ film.”

A month after Jackman was confirmed to return Kevin Feigi had said, “That’s what Jennifer Walters just asked the robot in the final episode of ‘She-Hulk.’ And I’ll give you the same answer that he gave, which was, I don’t remember, no answer, I think was what he gave, yes. But Deadpool and Wolverine, you know, we’re getting close.”

Shawn Levy who is the director of the threequel shared his excitement about being on set with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, I’m having so much fun, and I haven’t even hit the shooting floor yet. […] I have to say, developing a Deadpool movie is one of the most fun creative experiences of my life because it’s not just that it’s rated R. It’s that it’s so filled with self-awareness, and that makes in-writing very, very fun in a way that is unique to that franchise.”

Deadpool 3 is slated to release on 6th September 2024 in MCU’s Phase 6.
