When it released back in 1986, Top Gun wasn’t a critical hit and even today its ratings aren’t great. But Top Gun is one of the prime examples of a film ageing well as today it has a cult following. Not just that, it is adored by fans all over the world and hailed as one of the best Hollywood action films of all time. So, it was expected that when the franchise returns wit Top Gun: Maverick nearly 36 years later, it would be an instant blockbuster.

But Top Gun: Maverick is not just bound to be a commercial blockbuster but also one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Yes! The film was produced at a budget of $152 Million and if the predictions are correct, it can extract that from the domestic box office itself. As for worldwide box office the film may earn anywhere from $715 Million to even Billion Dollar club. But how much does it actually need to be bigger than the original one?

While Maverick is already bigger than the original in terms of reviews and rating, here’s how much it would require to beat Top Gun 1986. The original Top Gun’s lifetime worldwide gross was $357.1 million. Of course, this figure is in 1986 dollars and after conversion according to inflation rates, it would land at a figure of whopping $924.4 million in 2022. So, to beat that Top Gun: Maverick is required to earn somewhere around $1 Billion at it’s Worldwide Box Office.

Can Top Gun: Maverick Earn a Billion Dollars?

Now the question is whether it could earn this much, and if everything goes as planned it would! There are multiple reasons for it:

  • There is an overwhelming amount of hype regarding this film even 35 years after the original’s release.
  • People all over the world are revenge watching cinema in theatres after suffering years of lockdowns.
  • Maverick is very popular on social media and trends almost everyday, especially since reviews came in.
  • It doesn’t face much competition from its release date till July except Jurassic World: Dominion.
  • It has been flooded with positive reviews calling it the best action flick and the biggest movie since some time.
  • A huge oversees fan base which can’t wait to see the film as soon as possible.

So, considering all this, it is very likely that Top Gun: Maverick crosses the $1 Billion mark and surpasses the original Top Gun adjusted for inflation.
