Backrooms (2026) is an American science fiction psychological horror film directed by Kane Parsons in his feature-length directorial debut. Based on Parsons’ viral YouTube web series inspired by the iconic internet creepypasta, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. The story follows a furniture store owner and his therapist who discover an endless dimension of eerie liminal spaces hidden beneath the store’s basement, leading them into a terrifying supernatural nightmare.
Released theatrically by A24 on May 29, 2026, Backrooms became a phenomenon, grossing over $330 million worldwide to become A24’s highest-grossing film of all time. It also cemented Kane Parsons as the youngest filmmaker ever to top the U.S. box office. Backrooms Digital and VOD Release
Backrooms is officially scheduled to arrive on Premium Video-on-Demand (PVOD) on July 7, 2026.
The film will be available to rent or purchase through major digital storefronts including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Fandango at Home. The digital release comes just over a month after the film’s theatrical debut, giving audiences their first opportunity to experience the liminal horror phenomenon from home.
Blu-ray and Physical Media
A24 has not yet announced an official Blu-ray, DVD, or 4K UHD release date for Backrooms. However, based on the studio’s typical home media release pattern, physical editions are expected to arrive in late Summer or early Fall 2026, roughly two to three months after the theatrical release. Physical editions are expected to include:
- Standard Blu-ray and DVD editions
- 4K Ultra HD release
- Digital copy access
- Behind-the-scenes featurettes and other bonus content
Official details regarding special features and collector’s editions have not yet been revealed.
Backrooms Streaming Release
Backrooms is expected to stream exclusively on Max (formerly HBO Max). Thanks to A24’s output agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, Max remains the film’s most likely subscription streaming home following its digital and physical media rollout. While an official streaming release date has not yet been announced, Backrooms is currently expected to begin streaming in late September or October 2026.
