If there is any movie that has single-handedly made this summer better for theatre owners, then it is Barbie. The Barbenheimer hype has taken over the world. The box office battle is already in Barbie’s favor. Oppenheimer has earned only half of what Barbie has accomplished. Although, for a R-rated biographical drama that is itself a huge achievement. Out of all records, Barbie is now headed towards another box office milestone. The film is on course to become 2023’s Highest Grosser, besting The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $1.3 billion. However, despite Barbie’s amazing box office run Warner Bros. has announced that audiences would be able to watch Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster at home as well.

Barbie Is Coming Out Next Month!

After ruling the box office, Barbie will now be available to watch at home. Despite performing so well at the box office, Warner Bros. is moving forward with its aggresive theatre to digital strategy. Unlike it’s rival, Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer will not be headed to online platforms anytime soon, due to its 120-day exclusive theatrical release window. Barbie on the other hand will be available for digital purchase online on Tuesday, September 5.

After only 46 days of its theatrical run, the summer smash has given fans the opportunity to watch the summer blockbuster at home. Warner Bros’ other releases have also gotten early VOD release date. The Flash (a box office bomb) was available online 32 days after hitting theaters on June 16. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, had a lighting-fast exclusive run in theaters. Three weeks following its opening, Shazam! 2 could be purchased online.

Evil Dead Rise had an even imminent online release as the horror flick hit digital platforms on May 9, 18 days after its theatrical release. These films didn’t perform as well as Barbie, so, the studio could’ve made an exception for the film and given it a longer theatrical run. Then again, the only other $1 billion film in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. could be purchased online 41 days after opening. As far as Barbie’s streaming date is concerned, there is no update given so far. However, the film will likely come out around late October.

Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
