House of the Dragon Season 4 Has a Problem: It Has Run Out of Time to Tell Its Best Stories

Major spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 and Fire & Blood ahead.

The Season 3 finale has finally brought House of the Dragon to the First Battle of Tumbleton and the betrayal of the two dragonriders. After three seasons and 24 episodes, the Dance of the Dragons is finally entering its most destructive phase. There is just one problem: House of the Dragon Season 4 has only eight episodes left to wrap up the dance.

The Obvious Problem

Before we move on, first let us look at everything still waiting to happen to put things into perspective. Well, let’s see, we have:

• Battle Above the God’s Eye
• Fall of Dragonstone
• Second Battle of Tumbleton
• The Shepherd’s Uprising
• The Riots in King’s Landing & The Storming of the Dragonpit
• The final confrontation at Dragonstone
• The Short Reign of Aegon II
• The Hour of the Wolf & Aegon III’s crowning (where the hell is he anyway?)

That’s an absurd amount of material for a single eight-episode season. The bigger problem is that House of the Dragon season 4 doesn’t only have George R.R. Martin’s story left to finish but also has its own storylines to wrap up. The show has spent considerable time expanding and altering Fire & Blood, introducing new motivations, relationships and conflicts.

Some of these additions have worked well. Others have left audiences increasingly frustrated, with many fans accusing the show of drifting into fan-fiction territory since Season 2. And now all of those choices need payoffs, otherwise they risk disappointing show-only fans as well.

So What Can Season 4 Do?

As obvious as the problems are, the solutions seem to be even more problematic. There are essentially three possibilities.

1. Rush Through Everything

The simplest solution is to turn Season 4 into a historical crash course. God’s Eye > Dragonstone > Tumbleton II > King’s Landing > Dragonpit > Rhaenyra > Aegon > Hour of the Wolf and finally Aegon III, one after another. It would allow the show to technically cover everything, but at the risk of making some of the most important moments in the entire Dance feel like bullet points. To my personal sorrow, I believe one of my favorite events aka the Hour of the Wolf might not be getting even half an hour of screen-time.

2. Cut Major Events

This may actually be the smarter option. Since the show has already drifted enough, it doesn’t need to faithfully reproduce every single event from Fire & Blood. Some battles and political developments can happen off-screen or be condensed so the truly important moments have room to breathe. But that creates another problem: fans have been waiting years for some of these moments. The Battle Above the God’s Eye cannot simply become a five-minute sequence because there wasn’t enough room for it. Nor can the Storming of the Dragonpit or the Hour of the Wolf be treated as historical footnotes.

3. Invent and Merge Events

The third possibility may be the most dangerous and yet most HBO-like. The show could merge multiple conflicts, create new events and use them to wrap several character arcs simultaneously. That could work brilliantly if done intelligently or it could produce exactly the kind of rushed, invented storytelling that has already frustrated parts of the audience. And this is ultimately what worries me most.

The problem isn’t that Season 4 has too many battles but that it has too many character arcs that need satisfying endings. Rhaenyra, Daemon, Aemond, Aegon II, Daeron, Addam, Joffrey (who has had nearly no screen time as it is) all need satisfying endings. Alicent, Corlys, Baela, Rhaena, Viserys II & Aegon III (who have major roles yet completely disappeared after season 1), and the other surviving characters need their stories resolved.

That is the irony of it all. House of the Dragon spent years building toward the Dance, sometimes frustrating audiences with how slowly it moved. Now that the Dance has finally reached its most important stage, the show has run out of time to tell it.
