In 2011, the world was taken by a storm with the biggest TV phenomenon of all time- Game of Thrones. An adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s book series of the name – A Song of Ice and Fire. The series lasted for a total of 8 seasons over 8 years with the final season coming out in 2019. We better not discuss the final season, to say the least pick any show that you think has the worst ending, Game of Thrones finale will top that. Once the show wrapped on a horrendous note, the fans were demanding to remake season 8. While the petition has over 3 million signatures currently, HBO made it clear they’re not doing it. This came as a disappointment to the show’s loyal fans though there was a silver lining. The success of Game of Thrones birthed prequel ideas for the story world of the show. First of which, will release this year on HBO Max – House of the Dragon.

Will House of The Dragon feature all houses from Game of Thrones?

While the prequel unlike Game of Thrones is the story of one specific house i.e., House Targaryen. It’ll concentrate on their side of the story until Rebellion from Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark overthrew the Mad King. However, this doesn’t mean the series won’t feature any houses except the Targaryen. The events taking place in the show, some of which we’ve heard in Game of Thrones has the involvement or rather conspiracy of many houses. So, let’s take a look at some of the houses that may feature in the series. But first, check out all the dragons which will make an appearance in the show.

House Hightower

While House Tyrell rule have their dominance over Reach, there are many powerful houses in this region, one being House Hightower. They rule over the city Oldtown and their seat is Castle Hightower, a massive, fortified lighthouse. It is claimed to be built by Bran the Builder- the famed architect from the Age of Heroes. Why will this house feature in the prequel?

In Dance of the Dragons, it is revealed that House Hightower holds many important position in the courts of Targaryen rulers. One of them is Otto Hightower, who served as Hand of the King to three Targaryen Kings, including Viserys I. The other being Queen Alicent, wife to Viserys and a key contributor to the civil war that followed after his death. In the recently released trailer, both characters have featured, Otto played by Rhys Ifans and Alicent played by Olivia Cooke.

House Velaryon

While most of you believe Targaryens to be the only Valyrian family in Westeros but that is not true, there are a few, the most prominent being House Velaryon of Driftmark. The Velaryons supposedly came to Westeros even before the Targaryens but have been there greatest allies since the Seven Kingdoms were formed.

One of the most famous member of their house is Corlys Velaryon, known as the Sea Snake, a famously wealthy explorer who lived during the Dance of Dragons. Many Velaryons tamed dragons and rode them into battle during the civil war aiding the Targaryens. Corlys Velaryon did feature in the recent trailer as well, played by Steve Toussaint.

House Strong

Believed to be descended from the First Men, House Strong was an influential house during the period when House of the Dragon takes place. They were a noble house from the Riverlands who joined House Tully in ousting the Ironborn. They ruled over Riverland before Aegon the Conqueror and House Targaryen took over.

However, they did come into the possession of the Ruined castle of Harrenhal after Balerion, the Black Dread burned it to a crisp. This castle featured in the third season of Game of Thrones where Arya Stark meets Tywin Lannister. They held important positions in Targaryen courts. However, like many families who possessed the cursed castle of Harrenhal, they too would fall from power.

Will House Lannister be in the House of the Dragon?

You thought the Lannisters were only playing games in Game of Thrones? Hardly, they’re extremely old players. This house gave us some of the best characters in Game of Thrones namely the sibling trio of Cersie, Jamie and Tyrion. They also provided with one of the most menacing villains in the form of Tywin and Joffrey.

The Lannisters were the wardens of Casterly Rock for a long time and will surely plotting something treacherous in House of the Dragon as well. Also, it was Tywin who fueled the rebellion and Jaime who killed Aerys II Targaryen, aka the Mad King. Since, this he was named as the Kingslayer, as he used to serve as his Hand.

House Baratheon

House Baratheon was the undoing of the Targaryen reign as Robert led rebellion ended the Mad King’s reign. Robert became the new King and for the first time there was a new house was on the Throne. Orys Baratheon was the founder of the House Baratheon. He was a general in Aegon I Targaryen’s army. He is also rumored to be Aegon’s bastard half brother.

The house belongs to the Stormlands and they were a paramount house in the Stormlands. Their seat, Storm’s End, is an ancient castle raised by the Storm Kings from the now-extinct House Durrandon. The rebellion led by Robert was however based on a lie. Lynna was never kidnapped by Rhaegar, however, the rumors were spread by the Baratheons and the truth was forever crushed.

Will House Stark be in the House of the Dragon?

One of the most prominent houses in Game of Thrones- House Stark. The house that triggered the events of Game of Thrones. The rebellion Robert Baratheon led against the Mad King was supported by Eddark Stark, the warden of Winterfell. Eddark had a chance to take the Iron Throne for himself but his morals didn’t allows him.

House Stark is one of the oldest lines of Westerosi nobility by far, claiming a line of descent stretching back over eight thousand years. They rule over the vast area of the North. The house was founded by Bran the Builder, who lived in the Age of Heroes. The house is one of the few Royal houses in Westeros. Their involvement in the rebellion and their long lineage will surely play a role in House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon – Targaryen

House Targaryen is by far the most powerful and influential house in the history of the Seven Kingdoms. It was founded by Aegon the Conqueror and his two sisters- Visenya and Rhaneys. With the help of their dragons they carved out the entire map of the Westeros region and made into the Seven Kingdoms. The house met its doom with the Mad King but it rose to power once again with the Mother of Dragons- Daenerys.

Only a Targaryen has enough power and character to ride a Dragon and yes that includes Jon Snow as well. He was a Targaryen as well. The Targaryens have often faced betrayal first with the rebellion however, the Mad King had it coming and the Queen Daenerys from Jon Snow. Regardless, House of the Dragon being the first prequel makes sense as the house has rich history and a great significance in Westerosi history.

HBO released the official trailer for the prequel this month that gives us good vibes about it. The creators have originally planned 5 seasons but whether they’ll get a chance to make it or not we’ll have to see. Till then check out the trailer.

To see if we covered all the houses featuring in The House of Dragon tune into HBO Max as they series debuts on the streaming service on 21st August 2022.
