The Newest Season Is A Beautifully Bizarre Balance Of Love And Madness

Collider praises Season 3 for perfectly blending together “the moodiness of Season 1 with the brisk-pacing, bizarro nature, and enormous heart of Season 2” and deems it “the most emotional and personal season yet.” Jenna Scherer from The A.V. Club commends the show for doing “a heroic job of balancing its massive ensemble” and deftly handling “the conversations Viktor has with each of his family members about his transition, as well as showcases the way he comes into his own throughout the season.” Screen Rant’s Mae Abdulbaki terms it an “enjoyable — if muddled — adventure.”

Is The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Better Than Previous Seasons?

However, some critics point out that season 3 may not hold up as well as previous seasons. Spencer Perry from Comicbook.com blames Netflix and the show’s creators for not letting it reach its fullest potential. “This season might be the weakest of the three, yet it remains a wholly entertaining series that is unlike anything else being produced on television”, he notes.

IGN writes that although one has to “hang in there through a few slower initial episodes” as the series initially feels a little whacky, it eventually “gains in heart and the clarity of its message”, showing us a heart-warming and flavourful picture of a flawed and complicated family.

Paste Magazine rates it 6.7/10 and remarks that “the writers seem happy to undercut their big turns and moves without really mining them for their full emotional worth.” SlashFilm calls it a “frustrating mix” of characters with exceptional arcs on the one hand and baffling ones on the other. Digital Spy’s David Opie informs watchers that they might have to look past the familiarity that pervades the majority of the new episodes and hints that the new episodes bring nothing new to the table.

Whatever the verdict, one thing is sure – the comfort of seeing their favourite characters return on-screen will be welcomed by fans who adore the cast. The upcoming season hits Netflix on June 22nd.
