The beloved Netflix series Stranger Things is returning for season 4 this May on 27th, and the creators of the series, Duffer Brothers revealed the finale is going to be 2 hours long. They further explained to a recent entertainment outlet in an interview for season 4 that Episodes 7 and 9 are particularly movies. The Duffer brothers also directed 5 of the 9 episodes of this season.

Stranger Things Season 4 Is Split in Two Parts

For the first time in the history of Netflix, it’s decided to release a season of a show split into two batch of episodes. This is due to the high production cost involved, as per The Wall Street Journal, each episode of Stranger Things reportedly cost around 30M$, putting the total budget of season 4 as 270M$, which is on par with some big budgeted Hollywood blockbuster movies. The decision also comes after Netflix’s latest announcement about the estimated subscriber loss and crackdown on password sharing. Maybe the streaming giant made this move to keep its subscriber base consistent and justify the cost of production.

The first volume of Season 4 is releasing on the streaming service on May 27, while second volume is going to come out on July 1.

What We Know about Season 4?

The initial synopsis written by the Duffer Brothers for the event of season 4’s first teaser trailer in February is as follows:

“We’re excited to officially announce that production for Stranger Things 4 is now underway—and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper! Although it’s not all good news for our “American”; [Hopper] is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, Russia, where he will face dangers both human… and other. Meanwhile, back in the States, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long-buried, something that connects everything…”

The Netflix official plot description for season 4 is as follows:

“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”

From the plot description, one can assume a new threat emerges for our heroes and they have to get back together to save Hawkins, or even the world, while trying to save Hopper from the clutches of enemies.

Is Season 5 of Stranger Things the final season?

The Duffer Brothers already announced Season 5 of Stranger Things will be its last with Season 4 being the penultimate season. Of course, they also revealed the door is open to spinoffs taking place in Hawkins with a different set of characters and new adventures. Some fans hope the show can come back in the future probably in the 90s or early 2000’s setting when the actors aged a bit.
