The reveal of God of War: Laufey gave fans far more than just a first look at Faye’s journey through the mysterious realm known as the Everywhen. The 20-minute gameplay showcase introduced several fascinating new characters, mythologies, and mysteries that could shape the future of the franchise. The Everywhen, described as an afterlife where gods from countless pantheons end up after death, dramatically expands the scope of the God of War universe. No longer restricted to Norse or Greek mythology, Santa Monica Studio now has a narrative playground that can connect deities and legends from across the world. While Laufey herself remains the heart of the story, four newly introduced figures have generated the most discussion among fans: Sekhmet, Begtse, Phranque, and Rue. Here’s everything we know so far.
Sekhmet & Her Pet Explained

Sekhmet is based on the Egyptian Goddess of War and one of the most powerful deities in Egyptian mythology. Known as the daughter of Ra, she is often associated with destruction, fire, plague, and healing. In God of War: Laufey, Sekhmet has become one of the rulers of the Everywhen. Alongside Begtse, she appears to have conquered much of the realm and now rules it through force.
Interestingly, the gameplay reveal also shows Sekhmet accompanied by a giant cat-like creature. While Santa Monica Studio has not revealed its identity, many fans believe it could be Bastet, another major Egyptian goddess. Given her role and reputation, Sekhmet looks set to be one of the game’s primary antagonists.
Begtse Explained

Based on the Mongolian and Tibetan war deity Begtse, the character represents a mythology rarely explored in mainstream gaming. In real-world mythology, Begtse is a wrathful protector deity associated with warfare and the defense of sacred teachings. He is often depicted as a heavily armored warrior with fiery red skin, orange hair, and three eyes.
The game’s version appears to retain his identity as a god of war while simplifying much of the religious and historical background. Like Sekhmet, Begtse eventually died and found himself in the Everywhen. There, he formed a partnership with the Egyptian goddess, and together they became the realm’s dominant power.
Phranque and Rue Explained

Phranque is perhaps the strangest character shown in the reveal—a floating cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid. After being imprisoned by Sekhmet and Begtse, he escapes with Laufey and becomes one of her companions. The most popular theory is that Phranque represents Metatron’s Cube, a sacred geometric symbol associated with divine order, protection, and creation in Jewish mysticism. Many fans also believe his cube form may not be his true appearance and that a larger reveal is coming later in the story.
Meanwhile, Rue is an enchanted ribbon-like being attached to a mysterious sword. Like Phranque, she is rescued by Laufey and joins her journey through the Everywhen. A popular fan theory suggests Rue may actually be connected to the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian mythology, especially if the sword eventually turns out to be Excalibur. At the moment, however, very little is known about her true identity.
Perhaps the most interesting theory comes from Reddit user mathlyfe, who believes Phranque and Rue may be hiding their true identities. Fans will remember that Santa Monica Studio previously disguised Laufey behind the simpler name “Faye” in the 2018 game. According to the theory Phranque could actually be Phra Angkarn, the Thai God of War and Rue could be Phra Rahu, a deity associated with illusion and cosmic phenomena. The names sound surprisingly similar, and both figures have connections in Thai mythology, making this one of the strongest theories currently circulating among fans.
Final Thoughts

The Everywhen may be the most exciting concept introduced in the franchise since the Norse saga began. With Egyptian, Mongolian, Arthurian, and potentially many other mythologies colliding in one realm, God of War: Laufey appears poised to dramatically expand the scope of the series.
Whether Phranque and Rue are exactly who they appear to be remains a mystery, but one thing is certain: Santa Monica Studio is hiding some major secrets, and fans are already trying to piece them together.
