Robert Eggers is one of the most unconventional directors working in Britain. In the age of superhero movies, the man resorts to make period films that are extremely experimental in nature. It first started out with The Witch and the overwhelming critical reception that the film received paved the way to an illustrious career. Following his solid debut, Eggers returned to cinema with another masterclass in storytelling with The Lighthouse. In my opinion, this was his best film. The Northman that came out last year was a visual spectacle for sure but didn’t impress at all. The type of cinema that Eggers preaches is not my taste but when I did watch The Lighthouse I understood its appeal. After delivering three back to back successes, the filmmaker is back with his fourth venture and we have its first look.

Nosferatu Image Gives Us First Look At The Robert Eggers Remake!

The classic vampire movie Nosferatu is getting an update and in the form of Robert Eggers’ remake. Scheduled for a 2024 release, the new Nosferatu reconceives the iconic 1922 vampire movie. The star of the IT movies for playing Pennywise the clown, Bill Skarsgård has been cast as the new Count Orlok, while The Idol star Lily-Rose Depp is also among the lead stars. On Monday, Empire published a new image that reveals a sneak peek at her character in the film. The photo obviously doesn’t reveal a look at Orlok but the silhouette of his clawed fingers can be seen, teasing the serious problem Depp will be facing. The new photo can be viewed below.

In Nosferatu, Depp plays Ellen Hutter, the wife of real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult, Renfield). Eggers teased that Depp is absolutely phenomenal with her performance even more Ellen’s story than previous versions.” On Skarsgård’s Orlok, Eggers added, “I’ll say that Bill has so transformed, I’m fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because he’s just… he’s not there. He felt like honoring [the previous Orlok actors] who had come before him. It’s all very subtle. But I think the main thing is that he’s even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that we’ve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.”

When asked how scary is the remake, Eggers didn’t hold anything back, “Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie”. Eggers teased a truly terrifying adaptation,“I do think that there hasn’t been an old-school Gothic movie that’s actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case.”

Nosferatu is expected to debut in theatres near you sometime in 2024.
