Road House is an upcoming action/thriller movie that is supposed to be the reimaging of the 1989 classic of the same name. Just to be clear, the original film is not remembered because it is a cinematic masterpiece. In fact, the film is remembered for all the wrong reasons. However, the reboot is directed by Doug Liman who has given us amazing films like  Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, etc. Road House (2024) stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams and Darren Barnet. Everything points towards this reboot being an amazing film… but is it? Let’s find out what the critics have to say about it.

Road House (2024) Reviews – Not Good Enough?

Road House debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a whopping 90% Fresh rating. At the time of writing, the film has a score of 92% from 12 reviews. Overall the reviews speak highly of the Doug Liman directorial but most of the critics feel that the film lacks the punch to make it an absolute knockout! Read the critics’ reviews below:

Ed Travis (Cinapse)“Ultimately it’ll be best to not pit the 1989 version against the 2024 version, because nobody ever wins a fight.”

Dan Bayer (Next Best Picture)“This “Road House” probably won’t have the lasting reputation that the ’80s version did. It’s entertaining enough for one watch but lacks that spark that makes for a classic.” Original Score: 6/10

Jacob Hall (Slashfilm) –  “”Road House” is at its most effective when it’s being funny, and Gyllenhaal, playing an action hero who gladly drives a group of baddies to the ER after he smashes their heads in, is more than up for the challenge.” Original Score: 5.5/10

Brian Tallerico (RogerEbert.com)“Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a fun performance that goes from charming to menacing, but even that gets lost in the chaos of a movie that needed to be sweaty, grounded, and urgent to work but becomes more and more like something you’d watch on Saturday morning.” Original Score: 2/4

Boyd Hilton (Empire Magazine) “Expertly handled by director Doug Liman, wittily scripted, and boasting a wonderfully original take on the action hero archetype, this new Road House is a total riot.” Original Score: 4/5

Adrian Horton (Guardian)“An entertaining and visceral, if at times unwieldy, romp of scene-chewing trash talk and smackdowns.”

Mike Ryan (Uproxx)“Yes, show Road House in theaters. Show it at school auditoriums. Show it on bathroom stalls. Road House should be perpetually playing at all times everywhere.”

Owen Gleiberman (Variety)““Road House” is an infectiously stylish piece of slumming.”

Christian Zilko (indieWire)““Road House” is a fitting update to its predecessor’s legacy. Not because it’s better, or even because it’s all that similar, but because it moves with the same unselfconscious stupidity that fueled so many of the ’80s blockbusters we remember so fondly.” Original Score: B-

Lovia Gyarkye (Hollywood Reporter)“Even though Road House will likely be measured by the intensity of its fights, it manages to shape a surprisingly grounded portrait of the Keys, and perhaps the South more broadly, through its music.”

James Preston Poole (But Why Tho? A Geek Community)“Road House shapes up as a serviceable remake that knows what it is, and doesn’t strive to innovate beyond that. In other words, the perfect movie for streaming.” Original Score: 6/10

Jamie Broadnax (Black Girl Nerds)“It leans into the campiness of it all and isn’t afraid to make fun of itself. This is exactly what a good popcorn movie is all about: explosions, vapid catchphrases and characters brimming with sex appeal.” Original Score: 3.5/5

Road House will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from March 21st, 2024.
