The fan favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate are returning once again as the Doctor and his assistant in an episode to celebrate BBC show’s 60th anniversary. The pair will also reunite with Doctor Who head writer Russel T Davies. The duo are returning after 12 years. Tennant first took over the role back in 2005, from Christopher Eccleston, and exited the show in 2010. He was succeeded by Matt Smith, though Tennant returned for a short appearance in the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor in 2013.

The 90-minute special episode will premiere later this year to celebrate BBC’s centenary. It will also be the last appearance of Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. The showrunner Russell T Davies said, “They’re back! And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna. What on earth is happening? Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.

Tennant and Tate continued to play their roles off screen in a series of spinoff audio adventures. While their onscreen tenure peaked during the 2008 series with a critically acclaimed 13-episode run of Doctor Who, which was further nominated for best drama at the BAFTA TV awards. It also had an average audience of eight million viewers per episode. Expectations are sky high that the special episode would once again bring back the lost glory of Doctor Who, whose viewer ratings has heavily fallen down for the past two years. The show will again return in 2023 after this special episode later this year.
