After HBO’s Game of Thrones and History TV’s Vikings tremendously disappointed the viewers and Netflix’ The Witcher is yet to make a mark, Netflix’s The Last Kingdom is the only remaining hope for the fans of period drama. The good news is that the latest season of the show didn’t just meet all our expectations but also immensely raised them!

Hey A#selings, don’t worry as this a non spoiler for season 4. But minor spoilers for the first 3 seasons may follow, so BEWARE!
Last Kingdom follows the story of King Alfred’s dream of a united England with the perspective of our protagonist Uhtred, son of Uhtred and his men. Though, the show focuses on the story of England, one of its major plot points has been Uhtred’s desire to reclaim Bebbanburg from his treacherous uncle. Fans of the show have been dying to see him to do that ever since season 1 but the show kept us as well as Uhtred waiting till now and finally this season takes us to Bebbanburg!

Well, what happens in Bebbanburg would stay in Bebbanburg as this is a non spoiler review. Lets move to the main plot of season 4 which was the political relations between Wessex ruled by young Edward (Son of Alfred The Great) and Mercia. Although it is also ruled by Edward through an accord with Lord Athelred of Mercia but for how long will that accord hold? On the other side, Danes including fan favorite Brida and their leader Cnut, plan on expanding their viking territory and destroying the Saxon kingdoms just like past 3 seasons. Would the Danes succeed this time? Again, I’ll stay tight-lipped🤐.

Trapped among all this, we find our protagonist Uhtred, who once again has to choose between his independence and Alfred’s dream of England. Last season saw Uhtred setting all his debts with Alfred and Wessex, once and for all but destiny and England weren’t done with him yet. He is dragged right back into the game in this season, partly because of his love for Athelflaed (daughter of Alfred / sister of Edward / wife of Athelred) and also because some part of him, does believe in Alfred’s dream. Just like the previous seasons, the MVP of the show is Uhtred, potrayed by the ever charming and gorgeous Alexander Dreymon, who is basically the driving force of this show. In short, there is no Last Kingdom without Uhtred Ragnarson!

So apart from Uhtred and his men, what was great this season? Well, lets begin with the action – I mean, who doesn’t like to see a few flying heads and hear the clanks of swords crossing with each other!? This season has got plenty of bloody and gory fight scenes, which will fulfil your appetite and more than three astounding battle sequences, which will remind you of the time when Game of Thrones used to be good. The overall dark setting and absolutely stunning cinematography of the show act as a feather to the cap and intensifies the visual experience. The production design and fight choreography also add a lot to its glorious battle sequences.

Coming to plot of the show, it was full of twists and turns, most of which, the viewers won’t anticipate if they haven’t read the books on which it is based on. It involves a lot of drama and a buckload of politics, accords and betrayals, which is nothing short of what we expect from such shows. Introduction of new characters like Uhtred’s son, Uhtred; Uhtred’s daughter, Stiorra; Edward’s son, Athaelstan; Danish invader, Sigtrygrr; Eardwulf and Eadith, made the show even more interesting as it was an absolute joy seeing them crossover with each other and with our favourites.
Last Kingdom Season 4 Characters
The Newcomers (Image: © Netflix)
Right from the season 1, the biggest strength of The Last Kingdom has been its powerful and influential characters, whom you literally root for! Season 3 of the show saw the departure of many of our beloved characters and the trend continues in season 4 as we loose quite a good amount of crucial and fan favourite characters. There were many moments in this season when we were genuinely afraid for our protagonists, except for Uhtred (as Uhtred > Everything else in the show) and some of those fears came true.

I was about to wrap up but then I remembered that I forgot to talk about its incredible soundtrack, which deserves no less than 50% the credit for making this show amazing! Its captivating opening theme and the OST thoughout its run, brilliantly reflects the visuals and adds a great deal in establishing the overall feel of the show. Season 4 was absolutely flawless in my eyes, though I kinda rooted for a longer final battle. But what happened in the finale was a great twist and would prove beneficial for the following seasons.

This season felt quite complete and wrapped up many crucial story-lines, but at the same time left us hanging about the fate of a few others. Overall, this season was a very satisfying one and a great addition to the series, making The Last Kingdom one of the best semi-fictional period drama available on any platform! I’ll take my leave here in the hope that it doesn’t disappoint us in future. But as Uhtred says, Destiny is All!
