Dragon Ball Super Super Hero Opens Over USD 40 Million At Global Box Office!

At the box office, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has reached a significant milestone, earning $45.24 globally after a $20.1 million opening weekend in US markets over three days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). Comparatively speaking, Dragon Ball Super: Broly made $12.8 million in its first three days of release (Wed-Fri) and $9.8 million in its debut weekend. Broly’s final domestic box office total was $30.7M, and in just its first weekend, DBS: Super Hero has already reached that amount!

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Opened Well In North America

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was released in Japan in June, and reviews have been mixed. Super Hero had a weaker opening weekend than its predecessors DBS: Broly, Resurrection F, and Battle of Gods; it also experienced a 55% drop-off in its second week, which caused it to lose the top spot at the box office very fast. The main theories as to why Super Hero didn’t perform as well as past Dragon Ball movies released in Japan include the post-pandemic market, the significant decision to change the primary character’s focus, and the debatable use of CGI animation. Additionally, the movie was leaked online, which might have had an impact.

It is all the more intriguing that DBS: Super Hero has had such a solid North American opening. The elements that may have kept Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero from being successful in Japan may now propel it to success in the United States and other overseas markets. A Dragon Ball movie draws a front-loaded audience of devoted fans, but there isn’t much in the way of direct competition at the box office this week or in the near future, so it will be interesting to watch what the week-to-week drop-off will be.

Regarding the characters, that makes sense because many US fans, in particular, were first exposed to Dragon Ball through DBZ, a show that prominently featured Gohan. As Gohan and Piccolo are propelled into a new age by Super Hero, the Western audience has likewise carried the torch for Gohan into the Dragon Ball Super period. It undoubtedly also helps that the manga adaptation of DBS has planned a substantial new arc that will bring Frieza back in a more potent form.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is currently showing in theatres worldwide.
