Godzilla Minus One was one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Apart from that, the Takashi Yamazaki directorial was one of the most profitable films of the year . Made on a minuscule budget of $15 million has grossed $106.7 million worldwide. That’s an incredible feat. Ever since its release, the Japanese film has been praised by the entire world resulting in such mammoth box office numbers. People are even calling it better than Godzilla’s Monsterverse counterpart. But how did they manage that? The Monsterverse films are made astronomical of almost $200 million. How can a film with less than 1/16th of the budget look just as good?

How Does Godzilla Minus One Look So Good In Such a Small Budget?

The reported budget of Godzilla Minus One is $15 million according to Deadline, however, director Takahashi Yamazaki still refuses to confirm the budget of the film despite the film generating such amazing numbers. Why? Well, the reason is quite funny and practical. In a recent interview the director was asked “how does it feel to be nominated for an Academy award alongside Oppenheimer for visual effects?”

The director revealed, “I’m not telling the budget because then everyone’s gonna want me to make a movie for that number!” He further added, “It’s interesting because the world was much different when began development on this film. But as we entered post-production, and we’re working on the VFX, there was almost every direction we felt the world was heading into and I think everyone felt that to some degree that we’re getting closer and closer to war of some sort.”

“And perhaps that was the same phenomenon that was happening with Oppenheimer, and the top five films in Japan also deal with war in some way or postwar Japan, whether it’s animation, anime or live action,” Yamazaki continued. “So there’s this very bizarre air I would say, and you look at different films around the world. I think that perhaps filmmakers and creatives are feeling something and they feel a need to express this somehow.”

Godzilla Minus One is currently playing in USA theatres.
