The Exorcist: Believer Full Plot Summary and Recap

As it happens the full plot of the film is now available since the film has released in select theatres worldwide. So, read at your own risk as MAJOR potential SPOILERS follow below.

The movie starts off incredibly well with a lot of suspense. We are introduced to the Fielding family. However, Angela’s mother is killed in an accident. It’s tragic and brutal Then there is a time jump. Angela and her father Tanner are still dealing with the trauma of the death of Angela’s mother. The pacing of the entire movie is very slow, it’s a slow bum. One day, Tanner drops Angele off at school and she meets her friend Katherine Later they go into the woods. The girls stumble upon a hole in the woods and that’s the last shot of them before they go missing. The hole is never explained, and how they got possessed is never explained. It is all a mystery. The parents alert the authorities after the girls still have not appeared after several hours.

The chaos breaks loose, many police cars and task forces comb the woods, drive through streets, alleys and the parents also help to search for their children. So far, the film has been very captivating. A few days later the girls are returning, already possessed. They start, acting weird. Sadly, there’s no body homor in this movie from the possessed girls. No spider walking, no head spinning, just some cuts and bruises and that’s it. The demonic dialogue from the original movie was deeply personal and disgusting. We only get one line like that early on, and then never again does the possession dialogue match that of the original abhorrence. The girls start to go completely nuts, they are often admitted to the hospital, Tanner meets a nurse there named Paula.

They come to the result that the girls are possessed by one or more demons. Paula leads Tanner and the other parents of Katherine, whose name I have forgotten, to Chris MacNeil. Chris has been studying exorcism and the occult since the events of the first movie and has written a book about the events and is an expert in this area, but she says that she has never practiced an exorcism in her life. Tanner asks her for help anyway, because now in the 21st century exists no Exorcist anymore. Chris gets asked why she wasn’t allowed in the room during the OG exorcism, she says “cuz of the patriarchy. Chris wants to see the girls and follows the parents to the hospital. There we get some jump scares and Chris concludes that it’s just one demon.

What’s weird is that they don’t even mention the name of the demon, they imply it’s the same as the original but you’ll never hear the name Pau Chris mentions that she has never seen such an obsession on two people at the same time. She’s saying, that we need all the rituals and methods of exorcism of all religions together to be able to defeat this demon. I can’t remember exactly what happens then, but the parents get into big trouble and Chris comes in and decides to face the demon ALONE. She wants to exercise one of the girls but gets messed up. There is a brief flashback dialog about what pater Merrin said in the first movie, that demon attacks are psychological and powerful.

The demon plays a trick on Chris Chris does everything wrong in this exorcism that can be done wrong, he speaks in Regan’s voice and thus breaks her mind. She learned that lesson the hard way Chris’s mind is beaten down. She’s out for the count for the rest of the movie until the end. The parents prepare everything for the exorcism and a priest is also present, who was not important before in the film. They follow Chris’s idea that they should use all the methods of all religions. The finale is underwhelming and gets interrupted like 8 times. It feels like it’s building to something, then all the sudden they just stop. And then they restart. And then there’s an interruption.

There was a really bizarre inexplicable moment where some lady makes smoke come out of the fireplace and then it floats around weirdly then goes away? Didn’t make sense at all. In the end, they manage to exorcise the demon from both girls. At the end we see Chris again, Linda Blair shows up briefly for an appearance as Regan and has a little dialogue with her mother. A cameo. That was the whole movie. In my opinion, it didn’t do the original justice. They completely underused their legacy characters. The movie isn’t about Chris. Chris McNeil gets sought out, she comes in halfway through, acts like she knows what she’s doing and then immediately gets fucked up and does nothing for the rest of the movie. Anyways, her daughter Regam visits her and is on screen for 3 seconds.

The Exorcist: Believer is all set to release in theatres on 13th October2023.
