MCU’s latest entry and the third installment in the Ant-Man franchise has been a recipient of the second worst reviews that any MCU film has faced. It is only the second MCU film to get a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. It has now tied with Eternals to have the lowest score RT score for an MCU film. With all this negativity around the film the box office prediction of the film weren’t great. The Ant-Man threequel was predicted to earn $95 million to $100 million in North America over the traditional weekend and $110 through President’s Day on Monday. As it was the new nation-wide release it would take the #1 spot from at the box office from Magic Mike’s Last Dance from last week. At the international box office, the film is clearly making around $160 million, although estimates went up to $130-190 million.

As this is the first MCU film to release in China after Endgame, it was set to bring in 35-55 million. These estimates were significantly lower than all the MCU films released in 2022.  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($185 million), Thor: Love and Thunder ($144 million) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($181 million). However, in comparison to the franchise that it is a part of, it was an upgrade. 2015’s Ant-Man ($57 million) and 2018’s sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp ($76 million domestically and $161 million globally). Both previous Ant-Man films tapped out at the box office with $519 million and $622 million worldwide, respectively. While these estimates were disappointing and concerning it looks like the film fared performed better than expected.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Is Not a Box Office Disappointment!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Reviews Roundup - Not Good

The Ant-Man threequel has opened significantly better at the box office than what the predictions said. Quantumania brought in $46 million on Friday, $33.8 million on Saturday and $24.2 million on Sunday and $14 million on Monday. Bringing the 3-day weekend total to $104 million while the 4 day total rises to $118 million which is a larger sum than what the predictions were. The film is doing well overseas as well as the 3 day total of the film comes down to $225 million which is almost $35 million more than the highest estimate.

This figure makes it the biggest opening in the Ant-Man franchise and while the figure is less than the other MCU releases, on its own these numbers are very good. Another feat achieved by the threequel is that it has become the third highest weekend opening in the month of February. Here are is the complete list:

  1. Black Panther (2018): $202 million
  2. Deadpool (2016): $132.4 million
  3. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023): $118 million
  4. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015): 85.1 million
  5. The Passion of the Christ (2004): $83.8 million

Although, the film has opened well it doesn’t guarantee whether it will continue to do so considering that the word of mouth of the film is particularly bad. We might see a steady drop in numbers in the coming weeks. Even in the three days there was a gradual drop after the powerful opening on Friday. Considering the budget of the film is around $200 million I can’t be sure whether the film will be able to break even. We might see another Black Adam, which opened well but then couldn’t sustain. Will Quantumania be MCU’s first flop? Let’s see.

The core cast of the Ant-Man franchise including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas are returning. Along with these regulars, the supporting cast of the film has added Kathryn Newton, Jonathan Majors, Bill Murray and Michelle Pfeiffer.
