Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Gets Banned In United Arab Emirates

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s performance hasn’t wavered in the second week. In fact, the hold of the sequel over the audience is phenomenal. The film continued to perform strong in its second week, hitting $226 million domestically and $390 million globally and those numbers aren’t just good. They’re record breaking. The sequel hasn’t been in theatres for more than two weeks and it has crossed the lifetime collection of its predecessor. Into the Spider-Verse was made on a budget of $90 million and it earned $384 million. Across the Spider-Verse is made on a slightly bigger budget of $100 million and has already gone way past that number. This makes the sequel the highest grossing animated film for Sony Pictures. As you can see, it is not just the US but the entire world that is going crazy about the film. However, there is one nation that is not a fan of the film the sequel seems.

Why Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Banned In The UAE?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was all set to debut in the UAE before a report on Thursday stated that the Spider-Verse sequel has been banned in the country as the film didn’t meet the censorship guidelines of the country. While we don’t have the exact reason of the ban but a report certainly suggests that the reason behind the ban could partially be tied to the “Protect Trans Lives” banner shown in the bedroom of Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen. I definitely feel sad for all the fans in the UAE who won’t get a chance to see the film on the big screen.

This is not the first time that UAE has banned an animated film in their country. Last year Pixar’s Lightyear suffered a similar fate due to the depiction of a same-sex kiss. The Into the Spider-Verse sequel stars Oscar Isaac, Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson and Issa Rae in prominent roles. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently playing in theatres near you.
