Shadow and Bone is a Netflix series that is partly adapted from the book of the same name and Six of Crows. The series debuted on the streaming giant in 2021, it was an instant table topper. The fantastical setting, dramatic plot points and the surreal mystery made the show a hit amongst the audiences. As Netflix wants to desperately hold on to whatever makes their viewers renew subscriptions, the show was immediately renewed for a second season. Thankfully, unlike what we’re seeing now, the fans didn’t have to wait very long for the glorious show to return. Just two years after the first season’s debut, the second season has released. What are the critics saying about it? Is it another messy fantasy show with zero vision and too many resources or is it one of the few exceptions? Let’s find out!

Shadow and Bone Reviews Round-Up: A Great Sequel Season?

Shadow and Bone Season Two’s synopsis reads as, “Shadow and Bone season 2 picks up shortly after the end of season 1. The Crows — Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), and Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) — return to Ketterdam only to discover Pekka Rollins (Dean Lennox Kelly) has taken the Crow Club for himself. Worst of all, the trio are now wanted for a murder they didn’t commit. The Crows unite with demolitions expert Wylan (Jack Wolfe) and Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan), a Grisha who turns to Kaz for help in freeing Matthias (Calahan Skogman) the former Fjerdan slaver, from Hellgate prison, to clear their names and get back at Pekka.”

Reputed media website Screenrant called the show, A strong, intense and thrilling return to Grishaverse. Collider commented on the quality of the second season by putting out, A brilliant start squanders its potential.  The A.V. Club called the show A Netflix fantasy, supersized. TV Guide did have some criticism for the show as the website said, Overstuffed fantasy series has more good than it has time for. Techradar added to the criticism as the website commented on the dissatisfying end, Hit Netflix fantasy show’s return is magic-fueled mishmash. 

Yahoo UK Sports had nothing but praise but for the show, Gloriously campy fun. The Cosmic Circus called the show Beautiful and Fantastical. The Daily Beast was so impressed by the sequel season’s quality that it declared the show the Best kind of fantasy. The Indian Express also added to the praise, The Netflix show is gorgeous and well cast. Slash Film praised the show by calling it More love, more monsters. Tom’s Guide called the show Bigger and Bolder. Gizmodo says the show is Full of Delicious Melodrama. All eight episodes of Shadow and Bone season two will be available for streaming on Netflix from 16th March 2023.
