Netflix’ The Sandman season 1 opened to widely positive reviews and since then, has developed a cult following. The first season debuted back in August 2023 with 11 episodes and though it was not the best superhero show, it was certainly a unique one. Based on DC Comics, it tells the story of Morpheus, the personification of dreams and one of the seven Endless, escapes from captivity and sets out to restore order to his realm, the Dreaming. While there were rumors that The Sandman Season 2 has been cancelled, they were quickly debunked, and here’s all you need to know about it.

When Will The Sandman Season 2 Release on Netflix?

After the critical success of The Sandman, it was renewed by Netflix for a Season 2 in November 2022. After that began the rumors of season 2 being canned by Netflix. As it happens, Netflix also toyed with fans by providing them absolutely no updates before revealing in April 2023 that the scripts were ready. During a Q/A, Neil Gaiman answered fans, “Scripts are written. We are casting the first episode we will be shooting. Sets are being designed.” Then at the end of June we got updates that the filming for season 2 had begun. In fact, we also got to see the first look of Tom Sturridge in full costume ready to play the Dream of the Endless aka Morpheus in Season 2. We’ll talk more about this in the following section but first, let us talk about the release.

So, even though the filming began in June, it was quicky halted next month due to the WAG and SAG-Strikes. Speaking on the matter Gaiman made it clear that, “Whether or not any of ‘Sandman’ is delayed depends on how long the strike goes. And there won’t be scab scripts on Sandman.” Once the filming resumes, it will go on for 9-10 months just like season 1 and then there’ll be a few month of post production as well. So, even though the SAG-AFTRA strikes end next month itself, we won’t be getting Season 2 before at least mid 2025.

First of all, in January 2023, it was confirmed that The Sandman‘s Netflix continuation will seemingly not be dubbed Season 2, as the format for the upcoming episodes is currently unclear. It is possible that it comes out in 2 parts with each part having a different sub-name much like movies and spin-offs like what Netflix did with Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne. As for the plot, Season 2 is expected to adapt the third and fourth volumes of Neil Gaiman tales, those being Dream Country (issues 17 to 20) and Season of Mists (issues 21 to 28).

Interestingly, the first look photos mentioned above also revealed a new character who is similarly dressed to Sturridge but in white. Based on the photos, Sturridge’s Morpheus appears to be having a tense confrontation with the new character. This character is being identified as Orpheus by the fans and the actor hasn’t fully been recognised or credited yet. Some fans have recognized the Orpheus actor as Ruairi O’Connor and The Cinemaholic reported the same. Although none of this has been officially confirmed yet, if this is true then we’ll be seeing the adaptation of the story Song of Orpheus in Season 2 as well.

Netflix’s head of UCAN scripted TV Peter Friedlander revealed some crucial piece of information about the upcoming season, “I’m very excited about what we have in store and we have made some great decisions around where this will go. So it’s a stay-tuned and watch. Like you, I am a major ‘Sandman’ fan and to be able to watch Neil and Allan do what they do is extraordinary.” As for the cast and characters, below mentioned ones will most likely be there:

  • Tom Sturridge – Morpheus/Dream
  • Gwendoline Christie – Lucifer Morningstar
  • Vivienne Acheampong – Lucienne
  • Kirby Howell-Baptiste – Death
  • Mason Alexander Park – Desire
  • Donna Preston – Despair
  • Jenna Coleman – Johanna Constantine
  • Vanesu Samunyai – Rose Walker
  • Eddie Karanja – Jed Walker
  • Patton Oswalt – Matthew the Raven
  • Sanjeev Bhaskar – Cain
  • Asim Chaudhry – Able
